Area

The standard unit of area shall be the nanoWales, defined as 1nWa, representing 0.0000207km2 or 20.78m2, 5.195 Thai talang wah or 28.99 Old Spanish square vara. The microWales, milliWales and Wales (Wa) are, naturally, accepted multiples of the base nanoWales.

* Football pitch = 194.89nWa
* Wales = 1,000,000,000nWa
* Belgium = 1.47Wa
* Democratic Republic of Congo = 113.3Wa
* Known universe (rolled out flat) = 19468502x1012x10256Wa

Steve alerted me to this one (Wish he would post them himself πŸ™‚ ). Thanks dude! Funny as h e double toothpicks…

Hexayurt Project – How To Live Wiki

Steve pointed out that I hadn’t posted about this yet so here it is. One of the links that I lost in the iBook freezing up and firefox not reloading all the many windows and tabs that I had open.

Lotta potential in this design. I am thinking about using a framing system of some kind (2×2 or 2×4 with some trimming done or maybe bamboo or saplings) and an alternative fabric and/or plastic roofing/siding. I realize this defeats the purpose behind this design but for the buildings I need I think it will work out cheaper though not necessarily cooler/warmer.

These good folks have got a pile of bike trailer pix. Lots of good ideas here. Wish there was more information on some of them but better the pix they have than nothing. πŸ˜‰

US Drought Monitor

Still getting worse here in Alabama. Heat is drying the creek up during the day. Nighttime it starts flowing a bit again. Never seen it this dry.

Biologists Helping Bookstores

This is some funny stuff! Folks helping bookstores out by putting the “Intelligent Design” books in the proper places. πŸ˜‰

No, not the trash or toilet, just a bit of relocating into the proper categories. Go to the site and read a bit to find out which categories these are.

Bat House Project: Economy Bat House Plans

Interesting way to build a bat house. Looks simple enough.

IF the above link isn’t working (looks to me like the site is getting an upgrade) and /or for more info take a look at more plans (pdf only it looks like) at http://www.batcon.org/home/index.asp?idPage=47.

Bats are the best non electric, pesticide free flying insect control out there!

Don’t think I have posted this link before but am too lazy to look so if I have here it is again. πŸ˜‰

These are interesting but it would be nice if he would give a little background and maybe a view of the actual guts and/or construction of one of them. Cool stuff anyway.

New Microbial Fuel Cell Design Boosts Electricity Production

New Microbial Fuel Cell Design Boosts Electricity Production
From the article –
The new design developed by the OSU researchers involves sandwiching a cloth layer between the anode and the cathode parts of the microbial fuel cell, a configuration that greatly reduces the internal resistance, resulting in a much higher power density, Liu says.

In lab experiments, LiuÒ€ℒs team successfully generated 1,010 watts per cubic meter of reactor, or enough to power 16 60-watt light bulbs. The highest previous level of sustainable electricity generated from a cubic meter of air cathode microbial fuel cell is less than 115 watts. In experiments done even more recently, Liu and colleagues have generated more than 1,500 watts from the same reactor volume.

Size to power ratio is not quite there yet for home use anyway but in a large wastewater treatment plant, that’s not near as critical. Wonder what the ratio of gallons per hour of treated water to power generated per cubic meter is? I think that’s the right phrasing of the question… πŸ˜‰

Interesting piece of hardware. Like the specs, but with the parts they mention I suspect the price will be somewhere over a a thousand and possibly closer to two.
