Long night

By , June 7, 2008 9:49 am

So after I said I wasn’t gonna work on that site last night I did anyway. For over 3 hours and got it back almost completely up. Or so I thought when I went to bed. Get up this am and find that it seems to have vanished over night. Not just back to broken but the site is showing up as empty via html access. I can see the files and it looks like it’s all there via ftp but the dns seems to be pointing somewhere else. There is another domain name pointed to the site and it is showing a broken version so am a bit more than pissed off about this. With all the other problems we have had with this hosting company I am seriously thinking about another move. And not just of my stuff this time. More later after I cool off some… πŸ™

Site outages

By , April 30, 2008 8:52 pm

Not sure what the problem is. Went down again a little while ago after I edited a file. Been using ScribeFire to do all of the posting and most of the editing but was on the site and noticed a problem so did a edit to a file and when I went to post it everything went down. Problem is I’m not sure it was WordPress that caused it. When I went to the webhost manager the server load was 4.59 on 4 cpu’s and memory was at 48% or more. Went to the site control panel and couldn’t access phpMyAdmin at all. When the server load dropped below 2 it all came back up. So, am still undecided. There are still several folks on the WP forums that are having trouble but no wide spread problems. Guess I will post this from ScribeFire and see what happens.

Soggy Sunday

Trying ScribeFire out for standard posting to the blog(s) too. One nice thing about it is the ability to post to several different blogs. Not at the same time but it does allow you to save a post and post it again and again. Tis quite handy that. Several irritating things too. Whereas with a right click on a word Firefox will gives you the ability to check and correct the spelling of a word but ScribeFire doesn’t. It underlines the words but as yet I can’t find a way to check and correct the spelling. Just installed a dictionary but have to restart Firefox to get it to work so am going to finish this post and then restart it. Looks like I can save it as a draft so will try that and see if I can edit it after the restart.

And it works great! I’m liking this more and more. Seems that you can even edit existing entry’s, though I haven’t tried that yet. The spell check thing still isn’t working/or I can’t figure out how it is supposed to work. Will look into it more later.

Have got it configured at present to post to 3 different blogs and need to add several more. Not just mine but the 3 or 4 that customers sites are built with, so I can edit them too.

Added another blog (customers site) today with WordPress 2.5.1 and it seems to be working fine. The problem yesterday may have been something other than just WordPress but the timing sure was good if it was. Both times. Course like I said in an earlier post, I did replace all the files with a newly downloaded version and also updated the config file.

Been a long day. Gotten some things done, and put some off till tomorrow. Got a pile of stuff to go pick up to get put into a customers site. And still got one more to install a e-commerce program in that I haven’t gotten to yet. Seems like it’s either feast or famine.

Gonna make one more post and then call it a night. Till tomorrow…

Another WordPress Upgrade

By , April 26, 2008 8:56 am

Just after I posted last nights entry I noted that there was a new WordPress out. Downloaded it and installed it this morning. Looks good so far. Will see if it got rid of some irritations as soon as I upload a picture.

Burning Snowman Cookie Mold

And it looks like that problem is fixed. As well as another one dealing with positioning. Looks good! But on posting this, the picture was still not centered, just in the wysiwyg editior so that bug is still with us and actually worse as the editor now lies. Win some loose some…

The above picture of the burning snowman cookie mold is from the FX Cuisine site which I mentioned in an earlier post.

Thursday already?

By , January 24, 2008 10:56 pm

Where has the week gone? In a daze due to mild fever and illness I suspect. Have felt much better and some of the time do. Whatever it is is really weird. Sometimes perfectly fine, others feel like I got lungs full of crap and a sore throat, still others when the joints ache like the flu, and there is the disorientation and dizziness now and again. All in all not near as boring as some bugs, just wish it would get out of my system and life.

Almost got the e-commerce site where it can go live. Tim is putting product in like a mad man. Never seen anyone put in as much as fast before. Still got to get the info pages worded and in place, and add a few more bits of trim here and there but it’s close and should go live within a week. Will post a link here when it does.

Next got to get the book and junk site up and going. Was going with Drupal and Ubercart but after working with Zen Cart again I am leaning toward it instead. It’s come a long way since the last time I worked with it. Looks to be growing up rather well.

Bought a year of Skype Pro just now. Cat had called her mother and noted that our balance was going down as she talked. I checked and our previous year or whatever was up so $36.00 later we got another year of outgoing calls and a answering machine for those on Skype that call us if we aren’t around. Tried to get a local # on Skype In but the only thing they have is in Huntsville and Hartselle and both of those are long distance for land lines from here.

Time to check the fire and call it a night. Got a bunch of stuff in the tabs that I need to get posted before Firefox crashes or I make an error in clicking and close the wrong window again and loose them all. πŸ˜₯ So anyway will try to get that tomorrow or sometime soon. Game this Saturday so will be busy the next 3 days but will make an effort to post at least once a day. πŸ˜‰

Till then… 😎

Or however frustration expressed in a loud voice is expressed. πŸ‘Ώ Been trying to install and configure Ubercart for several hours now and am almost there I think. Still not sure what I did or didn’t do to begin with but must have been something or there was a glitch at one end or the other or somewhere in between.

Tried installing it just as I had on the test site. Created the database and user and input the information and after what appeared to be a good install told me that there was a problem that might be corrected by installing again. So I did. And got a page full of errors about weird stuff in the database. So deleted the database and recreated it. Ran the installer again and it seemed to work. Went to the site and it was there. Then started customizing and configuring it. Got an hour or so in and it sent me to a page that wasn’t there. 404 big time. OK, lets try again. Same thing. Went elsewhere and started configuring the cart it’s self. Got it about done and then noted no payment gateway. So went to the modules and there they were but not turned on. Turned the ones I needed on and submitted and got another 404. Did it again and again (trying different selections each time) and same thing. big BAD 404. πŸ‘Ώ So found a update script and ran it to get hit with errors out the wahzoo. Decided to try adding the modules in again and it worked. 😯 Have no idea how or why. But am gonna continue to continue, or keep on keeping on or try to go forward in some fashion anywho.

Coffee breaks over, time to return to the inverted position… πŸ™„

Rebuilding our book website

By , January 22, 2008 2:02 pm

The previous 4 posts are direct copies from our Too Many Books site. I am taking it down and rebuilding it from the ground up using something other than WordPress. WordPress is good for many things but for e-commerce it ain’t there just yet, and I need something now. So am going with Drupal and Ubercart using their website installer. Hope to have the site back up and actually use it for something soon.

Just what it says. Unfortunately some of the buttons don’t work in either Firefox or Safari on my mac. Haven’t tried Firefox or Opera on the linux machine but they do work on Internet Exploder 5.x for the mac which would seem to mean that the site is Microsloth centric. Lotta good info on Creasey and his writings if you can get to it.

More changes on the site

By , December 19, 2007 2:34 pm

Nothing added, just removing a bunch of time/bandwidth wasting crap.
Since there was no response (several months ago) about the insult of the day I finally removed it.
Also removed the technoratti (sp is wrong and I ain’t taking time to figure it out or look it up) code as it was taking several seconds to do it’s thing.
Redid all the recent posts that had pix and added more tags to cut down on the # of pix having to download.
Also cut the # of posts on the front page to 20.
Now to find a basic theme that has 2 columns and no background color or max column size.

Bits and bobs about this and that

By , September 13, 2007 11:45 am

Awoke this am to find a large number of hits on this site. Turns out that Morris, the fellow with the broken hinge mount, noted my comment on his problem and put a link to it on his site. Thanks for the link! His site can be found at http://www.dreamstate.eu/ for those of you who wish to follow his ordeal.

Also awoke to find that the update I did at The Nero Wolfe Site had managed to break most of the picture links, which is a BIG thing on that site as it is mostly dealing with the cover art of books in the Nero Wolfe series by Rex Stout. So after trying it figure out what I had done originally to get them to show up (2+ years ago and my memory is much like swiss cheese but with more holes) I went back to the old theme (which had displayed quite broken yesterday) and for some reason it worked right off. Had to add some of the new tracking code and scripts in here and there, but considering what I had done to get the pix to show up in the first place and what I would have had to do to get them back in now, tis no biggie. I’m gonna leave the old theme in place for now and just start redoing the entire pile of covers on another of my sites in a sub domain. Hate to loose the work and the domain but that one is coming up for renewal in Dec and I ain’t gonna spring for another year. Just ain’t worth it as there has been NO income from the site in the entire time I have had it online, so fark it…

I’m trying to decide what path to take on the new site. I want to sell books on it as well as showcase my collection but I don’t want to limit it to just the Nero Wolfe series so I need to decide on whether to use blogging, content management, e-commerce, or what kind of software. I’m more comfortable with WordPress but adding the code to each post to sell via paypal can be a bit of a bother. But the amount of crap that you have to go through to get the data into some of the other programs can be worse so gonna have to cognate a bit more on it. Comments and ideas are more than welcome.

Both of us have been down with something (still or again, not sure which) after having a couple of days getting things done. I’ve been mostly house bound and doing nothing requiring being upright for the last 3. Cat is doing the bed thing today. I’m upright but just barely. Guess I will post this and then go unlock the far gate so should anyone need to get in they can. Then will most likely come back and poke at the computer some more.

Nero Wolfe

My Nero Wolfe paperback covers site. Not that I have done anything with it in ages. Just a link to possibly remind myself to got off the back of my lap and do something to/with it…

Another new look

By , September 6, 2007 10:34 pm

Yep, another one to try to get accustomed to. I saw this theme which is called Very Plain Text at Joey’s new site, The Adventures of Accordion Guy in the 21st Century, and it struck me as being just what I was looking for. Plain, simple, and something to let the content shine through. So after beating out a few dents and dings and modifying it here and there, here it is for your viewing pleasure. Or not. as the case may be.

Like it?

Hate it?

Let me know…
