at about 3:30pm, I broke down, cleaned the filters and turned the ac on. Yes I know it’s supposed to be cooler today but it was up to 94.8 F out front at 12:45 and I am to the point of melting/itching/screaming, so tis on for now anyway. At least till it cools off a bit and then will get cut off. I can’t take it over about 85 any more.
And one spent mostly on the couch. Hoping tomorrow will be a bit cooler. Till then…
Went out this am and mailed out some ebay stuff then went and paid bills. After that went by the Salvation Army and picked up a few books then made a few thrift shop and antique mall stops where we just looked and enjoyed their ac (what of it there was). Stopped at Dollar Tree in Lenlock for some stuff and then home for the day. Did supper and a bit of reading of feeds and am about to call it an early night. Till tomorrow… π

Been a hot one today. After another long night last night slept in this morning. Got out mid afternoon and piddled around at the Antique Mall in Jacksonville for a while just to see what was new and to use some one else’s ac. Stopped at the grocery store and then went by my folks house to pick up a 13 inch sears planer my brother had left there for me. Sat and talked for a bit then when the lightening struck near by headed back home. Read a bit then ate and been browsing since. Till tomorrow… π
Problems and moves abound. I’m tired of dns changes taking days with one host where they take minutes with another. Changes are coming and soon. Still looking for the right hosting service but one way or another we are going to make a move soon and the company I work with is going to also.
I was informed a couple of hours ago that a dns change can take 72 hours to propagate across the Internet. The problem being that we didn’t make a dns change, the hosting service did and now they are telling us that it can take our sites down for 3 days or so and there is nothing that we or they can do about it. None of the other sites are affected, just the one I was working on last night. And they don’t know why it’s showing up as hosted by another company. Yet again. Neither do I, but I bet if I move it to another host this problem will not happen again. Asshats…
Spent most of the day out and about at yard sales, estate sale, thrift stores and using other folks ac. Did spend more money than we had planned to but got a bunch of good salable stuff, and I think made some good contacts. Going to hit the sack in a few and start again in the morning, so will type again when I get back. Till then… π
So after I said I wasn’t gonna work on that site last night I did anyway. For over 3 hours and got it back almost completely up. Or so I thought when I went to bed. Get up this am and find that it seems to have vanished over night. Not just back to broken but the site is showing up as empty via html access. I can see the files and it looks like it’s all there via ftp but the dns seems to be pointing somewhere else. There is another domain name pointed to the site and it is showing a broken version so am a bit more than pissed off about this. With all the other problems we have had with this hosting company I am seriously thinking about another move. And not just of my stuff this time. More later after I cool off some… π
Been fighting a bad hard drive today. Not in one of our machines for a change though. Turned out that the drive has about 8% bad sectors which is keeping it from doing much of anything. Found another drive that seemed ok that I tried to copy it over to but after a couple of tries wrote 00’s to and checked and it too had bad sectors so will wait till the customer gets another drive to me and will try again.
Keep having website corruption and hacking too. Not just on my sites but on customers sites. The problem with the customers sites has been hackers or some such putting foreign code and java scripts into the existing php pages. Makes for some interesting recovery problems. Have just been alerted to another site tonight that has problems. Am not going to even try tonight. Will go in tomorrow (or when I get to it as it’s not a paying site any more) and see what has to be done and worry about it then.
Tis still quite hot and I’m about done in so am gonna call it a night and start again tomorrow. Till then… π
Wooden Bikes
Wooden bicycles can be found all over the world. These handmade bikes are often larger-scale scooters that you sit on. Made with whatever wood can be found, they use small wooden home-made wheels covered with discarded rubber rims. Forward movement depends on the rider pushing with their feet.
Shades of The Flintstones! Quite ingenious designs of push bikes made mostly of wood and recycled materials. Quite an eyeopener…

Guess I over did it with the shelves and books, so today was mostly spent on the couch. Did get out for a short while this afternoon to pick up a few books and a set of Noritake china that we’re going to have up for sale here shortly. It’s a 90 (? haven’t counted it yet so may be off by a piece or two) piece set bought in Japan in 1950 or 51, marked Occupied Japan on the bottom. Nice stuff! Will have pictures and such up and a link to the sale site(s) asap. Other than that and shelving a very few books been mostly lazy today. Just too hot to do much and too sore even if it wasn’t. Hoping tomorrow will be a more productive day. Till then… π

First read this when I was 11 or 12. Fantastic book. Haven’t seen a copy in years so guess I’ll get to read it on the computer this time.

All 228 liner feet of them, and that’s not counting the books sitting on the floor in the 14 inches under the lowest shelf. There are now 8 sets of 4 foot wide units that have 7 shelves each, and one 4 foot section above the door. Lotta shelves. In fact they now take that entire wall except for the door, all 32 feet of it. Got all the books relocated and a fair number of the ones that had no home put into place. Still got a hundred or so in one of the living room chairs, but hope to get them put up later tonight. Got a 3 foot section over the bedroom door that I am going to add a shelf in, as well as another one the same over the door into Cat’s office at the other end of the room. Have a pile of old vhs tapes that I am going to build shelves for and move into what was the bathroom and that will leave the outside wall in the hall area open to cover with book shelves which will allow us to move another thousand or so from the Q-hut into here. Getting closer, I think.
Cat cut my locks off today. Washing the hair is now quick and mostly painless other than the razer burn on my neck. π And a LOT cooler. May cut it a bit shorter on top, just gonna wait and see how it works as is for now. Beard is still in place though I am thinking of giving it a summer trim up here soon.
For now am gonna take a break and gaze at my wall o books for a bit. And maybe put a few more in place. Then take an early snooze as last night was still working at nearly midnight and my feet and legs have been telling me about it all day. Till I type again… π
Been working on shelves and shelving books all day and most of the night. Am about 2/3s of the way through with reshelving the books. And lack one 4 foot section replacing the 2 inch thick shelf with a 1 inch thick piece, one 4 foot 6 inch section adding a shelf and the 16 foot section moving it up about 2 inches as well as blocking off the last window on that wall. Have already paneled over two of them and I think I have enough scrap to do the last one as well. All in all should be done with this portion of the rebuilding late tomorrow baring unforeseen problems and/or interruptions. Then I guess I will start on insulating paneling the inside of the upstairs in preparation to building in shelving and cabinets on all the walls. Slowly, slowly eats the elephant…
About to call it a night. Till tomorrow… π
Spent most of the day building more shelving for our books. Added 21 linear feet in the living room by removing a door. Am working on adding the 20 feet just below the ceiling and raising the existing 16 feet to allow hardbacks to stand upright on the top row. Not sure that last sentence makes sense unless you’ve been here. Will try to get pix and post them soon to try to explain it…
Got 10 pounds, minus about a pound of skin and fat, of chicken leg quarters in the 14″ dutch oven and carrots, celery, onions, and potatoes along with salt, pepper, chives, parsley, basil and oil, in the 12″ dutch oven cooking for supper and a lot more meals later on.
Started moving the books on the shelves. Still got thousands to go, as well as adding in the ones that are piled on top of and in between and on the floor. Tis a never ending job or seems that way. And when we buy a hundred or more a week I guess it really is… π
Gonna go and check on the food and start clearing off the top shelf to raise it. May or may not post again later. Depends on many things. Till I post again… π
Didn’t get out today. Or not off the property anyway. Did get outside a time or two but soon returned to the couch or computer. Got some of the books we bought Friday put on the shelves or piled in the to-sell piles. Still got about half of them to go. Did a bit on a couple of websites and that’s about all. Tomorrows another day. Will see what it brings. Till then… π
The 7 Deadly Homemade Weed Killers
I can certainly think of the 7+ weedy sins of the garden but knowing how to cleanse my garden of these weeds is even better. Especially if it can be done cheaply and with household items. Murdering weeds is a fun past time.
So, for your reading enjoyment, here are The 7 Deadly Homemade Weed Killers, guaranteed to help you eradicate the weeds you find in your garden.
Good list of mostly nontoxic ways to kill weeds.
Boiling water is also a good nontoxic way to kill red ant hills. Just put a (long) stick in the center of the hill and move it in a circle to make a funnel shaped hole in the center and quickly pour the boiling water into the hole so it spreads throughout the hill and gets the queen and eggs as well as most of the workers.
