PBS | I, Cringely . June 9, 2005 – Going for Broke
Apple’s Decision to Use Intel Processors Is Nothing Less Than an Attempt to Dethrone Microsoft. Really.
Me thinks Cringely has something here. Not sure what but something. The Intel/Apple merger makes sense in a kind of twisted way. And Jobs has shown in the past that he has large brass, or possibly cast iron, balls. So… Guess we wait and see what the near future brings.
Techdirt:Did Steve Jobs Pull An Osborne?
Didn’t know the name for it but while watching the keynote last night with Cat, I turned to here and said “Guess I won’t get that Mini Mac after all”.
Still got a few old machines lying around that I keep planning on getting up and running with linux but as the laptop is able to do everything I need, I just haven’t bothered.
2007 sounds like a good year to be saving up to buy a new Mac laptop in.
mrbarrett.com: Mac OS X on Intel; Primitive Benchmarks
First info starts trickling in.
Not sure yet. Just downloaded it to try.
“Growl is a global notification system for Mac OS X. Any application can send a notification to Growl, which will display an attractive message on your screen. Growl currently works with a growing number of applications.”
Backup Brain
“Thought of the day
You’re a Mac geek, so you’re planning on buying Tiger as soon as it’s available Friday, right? Even though your current Mac is a little old because you haven’t been able to afford a better one, you’re going to upgrade its OS.
If that’s you, wait a second, and think about it this way: if you buy just Tiger, its list price is $129. But if (after Friday) you buy a Mac mini instead, it’s $499 — which means that you’re really only paying $370 for the mini.
Think about that for a second: $370 for a Mac. Does anyone still say that Macs are too expensive?”
I like Dori’s math!
Looks to be an interesting (and useful) site.
Don’t know what happened but all but one of my channels are now gone. The only one that is left is The Accordion Guy. I just sent an email to the maintainer but looks to me like I am going to have to rebuild them from scratch. And I don’t want to! The damn things were there and now they aren’t. Makes me want to change to another aggregator. If I wasn’t comfortable with Shrook I would right now. I haven’t had major computer problems since changing back to the Mac and this has really upset me.
Guess I need to try to remember the list of channels I had. Was not a real long list but I use the computer because my memory for things like this really sucks.
UPDATE
Just heard back from Graham Parks, of Shrook fame, about the problem. Turns out he had his new server go down and had to revert to an old backup server which wasn’t up to date and it drove Shrook a bit bonkers on some machines.
I have managed to get about 70% of my channels back and the ones I can’t remember must not have made much of an impression on me. Or maybe I will remember them later on. Or not.
Taught me an important lesson though. I now have a backup of the OPML file squirled away for this kind of happenchance so maybe it won’t happen again. If only I can remember to update it after adding new entrys…
This one I don’t want to try. I may do so in spite of my misgivings but something tells me to let others try and evaluate it and save the $150 that it costs. Free 30 day trial. Not saying that there is anything wrong with the product. Just would rather have a support forum that I can talk to others about both good and bad things concerning a product before I plunk down that kind (or any for that matter) of money on a piece of software. When will Mac orientated software companies figure this out? Surely I’m not the only Mac user that feels this way…
Cool little app. Gonna have to get to know it better. Tried two or three of the multiple clipboard programs but none of them so far have worked like I want them to (like linux)…
