Happy Birthday to me!
Way too many of them too. I just don’t think I can actually be this old. But according to my date of birth, today I turned 53.
Cat is in Texas for a family reunion so have had the day to myself. Went out and did a library and thrift store crawl for books. Got 8 paperbacks and one hard back at the Jacksonville Public Library for $5.00, then headed south down highway 21 looking for food.
Got to the Seven Star Chinese Buffet before feeling compelled to turn in and fill up.
Had Coconut Buttered Shrimp for the first time and it was good! Seems to be an easy to overdo food so limited myself to two.
Another first time for me was the Cucumber Shrimp and again it was excellent.
The Mongolian Beef was good. Meat could have been tenderer but flavor was top of the line.
The Pepper Chicken was good but a bit on the over seasoned side. A tad less salt and a larger grind of pepper would be my preference.
The General Tso’s Chicken was overdone just a bit. From the flavor I suspect it was cooked in too hot a pan because the inside was fine, it was just the coating that was overdone.
The noodles, or Vegetable Lo Mein were so-so. I’ve had MUCH better.
The Iced Shrimp were quite good as was the cocktail sauce.
There was also some other kind of chicken which was rather bad and I seem to have blanked the name out.
Overall it was a pleasant meal, especially for a buffet. As I had water to drink the bill came to $5.42 which is extremely reasonable.
Highly recommended!
Then to the Oxford Public Library which had nothing I was interested in and only 8 or 10 books total for sale.
So back to Hway 21 and turning north took a left at Greenbriar and pulled into the Good Hope Thrift Store. Here I hit the jackpot! Got 6 Nero Wolfe’s along with 20 other paperbacks and 3 hardbacks for the princely sum of $8.00! I had gotten a box and asked the guy in charge what todays price for a box of books was and that’s what he figured it out to. I got one book that is worth much more. Red Mars by Kim Stanley Robinson in a signed first edition, bound in leather, with acid free paper and gilt edging! There is some minor discoloration on the cover that may or may not come off but overall the book is in fine condition.
Tried going to Puttin’ On The Ritz but though the sign said open and the lights were on, the door, she was locked…
So headed to the folks house to see them for a bit. Got a shirt (and then 2 castoff’s that dad didn’t like) and pair of pants, a finger light (will have to post a pix when Cat gets back with the camera), and a Farm Show Magazine 30th Anniversary Encyclopedia of Made It Myself Ideas. And some fresh picked green beans.
Cat had left a couple of DVD’s with them for me, so I got those while there too. Thanks Cat!
Then to the evil empire for staples and then home for the day.
Just finished supper and thinking about heading to the cooler part of the compound to read or watch a movie. Overall a very good birthday!
