Another day that was

Well the problems that I thought I was having with PCLOS 2007 TR2 was actually a combonation of motherboard and cdrom drive in the computer I was using as a test machine. Still not sure what the motherboard or processor problem is but tis trash now. Not that I broke it but it’s in pieces to be recycled. Not worth the time or trouble to try to fix it so got another even slower machine and moved the hard drive into it and had boot problems. So put the cdrom drive in it and it wouldn’t boot from the livecd. Put another cdrom drive in it and booted fine so reinstalled to the hard drive and everything is fine. Guess the cold was too much for it/them. Took several hours to determine just what was going on as everything was working (kinda) last night but wouldn’t boot this morning. Hate it when that happens!

Even with the cold I got out this afternoon and did a bit of work at the forge. Finished grinding and polishing the bottom fuller so tongs are next. Got the jaw on one half twisted over and the next fuller indention done, part of the hinge shaped and the next indention down the handle made before it got too dark to see what I was doing. Got to find the camera and I wll take pix of the pieces. Know it’s around here somewhere… 🙁

I hate that too–when you have a problem, and it’s the LAST thing that you try. Of course, that’s the usual way it is most of the time, but it’s really irritating when it’s item #12, instead of item #1, or #2, or #3….so many symptoms can be the same thing/a combination of things that it can be very interesting. I have gotten to where if I have a machine acting weird, I mean REALLY weird even for Windoze, I pop a memory test disk into it overnight and make sure (or reasonably sure, anyway) that the memory is OK. Cause, like nobody in the family is happy if Mama ain’t happy, nothing in the machine is right if the memory ain’t right. Right?

I like the smithing stuff, both yours and the links. Working a forge in this weather is probably a “close in” type of thing, whereas in July/August you probably would like some 10 foot tongs and hammer handles to do the work with. Remind me never to arm-wrestle a blacksmith…

Close in is a relative thing. Was cranking the blower handle yesterday evening and the wind shifted just a bit and the odor of burning hair came to me nose. Ducked and checked the facial fuzz with my hands but nothing was actively burning so went back to cranking but at a lower stance and as far away from active flame as I could get. Need to put a wind shield around the firepit. Or get a shed up to house it and the rest of the tools. More to do than time and energy permits…
