Backstrap weaving

Cool! Different from any other weaving that I have seen but still the same too. Interesting site.

It IS an interesting site, and it points out how much of our technology is built on top of thousands of years of development, all over the world. I mean, how many of us actually THINK about what went into making the cloth that makes up our clothes. We just take it for granted. But it wasn’t that long ago (as human history goes) that nearly everyone made their own cloth at home, or had to barter for it from the local weaver. “Look what they’ve done, to my loom, Ma. Look what they’ve done, to my loom……” If we ever do fall, we are going to fall a LONG-ass way, because very few of us (myself included) really know kaka about how to do much of anything that’s really important in the nitty-gritty. Here’s to hanging in there…..

I know a fair amount about weaving and cloth but wouldn’t want to have to make all of my own clothes to keep me warm. A bit of handmade as a wall hanging or belt or some such is one thing but production level weaving is best automated.

I suspect my personal interest goes back to preschool times when my great-aunt Bertie taught me to tat. She used to sit and make lace by the hour with a little tatting suttle or two. Even after she lost most of her vision she still did it by feel and rarely dropped a knot. I addapted a lot of that into the macrame that I used to do.

May try making one of the backstrap looms. they look interesting and easy to make too. Got plans to build an inkle loom for Cat. Just not got around to it yet.
