DesktopBSD
Just trying out DesktopBSD. It runs KDE even on older/slower machines fairly well.
Initially installed it on a PII 350 mhz with 120 mb ram and it ran at an acceptable speed.
So next step was to install it on the test machine which has an AMD Duron 800 mhz processor and 375 mb ram. Put it on a old WD 20 gb hd. Runs faster than my main machine with twice the mem. Seems to be faster than Vector Linux too. No bench marks, just my gut feeling. Some of the KDE stuff isn’t ready for prime time under Vector. Everything seems to be ready to go with DesktopBSD though! Think I will play with it a while and see how it does. Haven’t tried any of the BSD varients since a stint trying FreeBSD 3 or 4 years ago and must say that I am impressed with the ease and completeness of this distro.
I may try this just so I can tell people I dumped Linux because I wasn’t sure if it was a short or long “i”.
π Good one!
So far I haven’t run into anything non Linux like. Or I guess (looking at parent/child relationship) that now that I have used UNIX for a day, that Linux has little that is non BSD like. Or something. I think. Though this early on this first day of daylight savings time I’m not so sure that I am thinking either much or well… π
Yeah, the time change has me with an itchy soul, too.
On the /. commentaries, remember-they call them all *nixes. And they are, at least to my quite low-level of ignorance. But Linux (whichEVER “I” it is) is an imitation of Unix (there is a better word than “imitation”, but it won’t come up right now) and BSD IS Unix, so……from what I have heard (again on the /. commentaries, which can get both specific and rather heated) it is mainly a matter of command-line syntax, which I also understand varies somewhat from one Linux distribution to another, nacht whar? Anyway, since the CD I burned from the download of Vector won’t boot anyway, and I am about to go to my mother’s for Rick’s birthday lunch, I guess I’ll start a Desktop BSD dowload….gotta use all that beautiful cable bandwidth for SOMETHING…..
Don’t know if I noted it earlier but the DesktopBSD is install only. No liveCD for them.
Just fyi…
