Pix of the round house construction.

If you are thinking conventional construction check elsewhere. This is old style mixed with some new stuff. I use a tractor and chain saw. But I also have T augers to make big holes and use an axe and hatchet a lot in my building. A lot of things get put together with sheetrock screws but a lot of things get wood peg fasteners too. Some of my joints are mortise and tenion held together with rock screws. Tis whatever works easiest and best at the time.

Looks good. The design seems quite like Iron Age houses in Britain that I have seen reconstructions of. Any inspiration from there?

Of course, a round house is a round house, the world around.

Absolutely! Wales and Scotland as well as England used the basic design as did quite a few American indian tribes.

This one is being built using the rod or stick method. I got a stick 6 feet long and have used that to make the 12 foot and 6 foot measurements. That’s about all the measurement I plan to do other than stepping off the rafters and uprights. Everything else will be fitted by hand.

I am looking at several different roofing systems. The only problem I have with thatch is the flamability. This one, I suspect, will have a straw/hay insulating layer with plastic on top then 4 to 6 inches of dirt then carpet that I will plant grass in. Figure the carpet will hold the dirt in place till the grass can put roots in. Time will tell… 😉
