NewsForge | Switching art students to GNU/Linux
Interesting article. Worth the read for anyone working with computers. 😉
First post from the iBook using Ubuntu Linux and Airport Extreme Wifi! Running on live cd now but the sucker is as fast as this machine has ever been. Now I want to see how it does when installed on the hard drive.
Battery is about to go so will close for now.

Now this is the way to do it! Helios is at it again. This time at a retirement comunity.
Interesting breakdown of the $$$ spent on server sales – Windoze, Unix, and Linux.
What I’d like to see is how many of each is out there in the wild on the internets.

Another Live CD Distro. This one is OpenSolaris! Not tried it yet. Got to the download page and got confused as to WHICH version/file to get, then in the readme some remark was made about it being setup standard non-english. gonna have to read more before I waste the time downloading the wrong thing…
Looks like will do whatever is needed in a business or org as far as money. Includes emailed invoices (PDF) and printing checks. Perl based program so will run on UNIX, Mac OS X and/or if you really have to Windoze machines.
Screen shots look like a very polished program. Gonna have to try this.

Use old telephones as an intercom
Cool project! Guess I need to get some of the old ones out and try it. Even got a ring generator here somewhere.

A good read, with quite a few well thought out points. I especially liked the following:
“You know, screw them, if it’s a choice between putting everyone in Hollywood out of work – not that this would do that, but if that was in fact the outcome, which the industry says it would be – and if it’s a choice between that and eliminating all freedom of information, due process and privacy rights in electronic communication, then ‘Goodbye Hollywood’, it’s a no-brainer.”
The problem with it is that Hollywood (and it’s masses of lawyers) isn’t going to go quitely and the insane drm and restrictions that they are trying to force into law are screwing us all.
Solution? I haven’t a clue.
To be able to sleep with myself, I license my stuff (writing and photos and such) under Creative Commons, don’t buy new music cd’s due to the RIAA nor new dvd’s due to the MPAA, both because of their stand on drm and the out of control suing of their customers. I also quit buying or using Apple products for their stand on DRM. Linux and OSS software is all I use now.
Interesting article on setting up and running MyDNS and why to use it instead of BIND.
Interesting buildit yourself mobile wifi setup.

Cool! Now we can get to blocked sites from anywhere!
Boing Boing: Apple censors OSX-on-Intel message boards with DMCA
And yet another reason to tell Apple and it’s DRM happy lawyers to piss off! I’m switching my iBook to linux as soon as I can get the wireless working. Kubuntu runs fast even off the live CD and is fairly comfortable to work with. If/when they get the airport card working I am wiping the drive and moving to Linux land. Course since I haven’t replaced the failing drive yet (quit using the laptop till I can find/afford a BIG drive) when I do get the new one I suspect it will never have an apple os on it.
