First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then they lose. This was the four phase scenario outlined in an interview with Linux evangelist Jon Maddog Hall last month when discussing the likely response of Microsoft to the rise of Linux.

Microsoft do something counter productive? Never happen…

DesktopBSD

By , April 1, 2006 2:33 pm

Just trying out DesktopBSD. It runs KDE even on older/slower machines fairly well.

Initially installed it on a PII 350 mhz with 120 mb ram and it ran at an acceptable speed.

So next step was to install it on the test machine which has an AMD Duron 800 mhz processor and 375 mb ram. Put it on a old WD 20 gb hd. Runs faster than my main machine with twice the mem. Seems to be faster than Vector Linux too. No bench marks, just my gut feeling. Some of the KDE stuff isn’t ready for prime time under Vector. Everything seems to be ready to go with DesktopBSD though! Think I will play with it a while and see how it does. Haven’t tried any of the BSD varients since a stint trying FreeBSD 3 or 4 years ago and must say that I am impressed with the ease and completeness of this distro.

Vector Linux

By , March 31, 2006 5:38 pm

Been trying different distros lately (again), trying to find something that is easy to use both for beginners and those switching from Windo$e. One more requirement has been that it run on older hardware.

The machine I am on now (800mhz 384 mb ram) is older but is running much faster than the one I use daily (1000mhz 768 mb ram) running pclos. Both running KDE which I admit is a hog. However here on Vector Linux, with half the memory this machine flys whereas on the other one there is a noticable lag when doing things like there is a whole lot of stuff going on in the background.

Now to install it on a 250/300 mhz with 160 or less ram and see how it does… 😉

Open letter to sites REQUIRING FLASH

By , March 28, 2006 9:20 am

Note to folks with websites that depend on flash—

NOT EVERYONE IS WILLING OR ABLE TO DOWNLOAD A PLUG-IN THAT WILL ALLOW THEM TO SEE YOUR OH SO CUTE FLASH CRAP SITE!

The web was built to operate using “HTML” as the primary language. ALL browsers support “HTML”. Many DO NOT support “flash” which is a proprietary bandwidth hog and IS NOT designed to render entire websites with, no matter what Macromedia may claim.

If you just HAVE to have flash on your site try to have another site rendered in standard HTML that the browser is redirected to that will allow viewing of your site…

Thanks for reading.
