Coffee may cut the risk of dementia by blocking the damage cholesterol can inflict on the body, research suggests.
And a good reason to drink coffee… 🙄 😉

Mobile phones ‘more dangerous than smoking’ : TreeHugger
So says Dr. Vini Khurana, an Australian neurosurgeon. His recent 15-month critical review of the link between mobile phones and malignant brain tumors concludes that the phones could kill far more people than smoking or asbestos, that people should avoid using them wherever possible, and that governments and the mobile phone industry must take “immediate steps” to reduce exposure to their radiation.
I don’t know if they are or aren’t dangerous, but studies saying they are keep popping up from all over the world so I use one as little as possible. Time will tell.
Oatmeal cancer claim questioned
Oatmeal cancer claim questioned
A book by government health adviser Ane Bodil Sogaard says oatmeal contains acrylamide, which has been shown to cause cancer in laboratory rats, the Copenhagen Post said Thursday.
Makes me wonder which other breakfast cereal company(s) are lining his pockets.

Regulate Blood Sugar with Tea, Red Wine : Planet Green
While the heart-protecting and cancer-fighting powers of tea and red wine are near legendary, researchers at the University of Massachusetts Amherst have discovered that imbibing these beverages may help regulate the blood sugar of people with type 2 diabetes.
“Levels of blood sugar, or blood glucose, rise sharply in patients with type 2 diabetes immediately following a meal,†says Kalidas Shetty, professor of food biotechnology at the University of Massachusetts, and one of the authors of the study, which was published in the May issue of the Journal of Food Biochemistry. “Red wine and tea contain natural antioxidants that may slow the passage of glucose through the small intestine and eventually into the bloodstream and prevent this spike, which is an important step in managing this disease.â€
Building on some of the earlier posts about tea and red wine we come to this one combining the two to help regulate the blood sugar levels of folks with type 2 diabetes. Control is always better than medicine in my book… 😉

Soak in Epsom Salt : Planet Green
Soak in Epsom Salt : Planet Green
Who knew Epsom salt packed such a wallop of health benefits? Also known as hydrated magnesium sulfate, Epsom salt is a powerful source of magnesium, an element the National Academy of Sciences says most Americans are deficient in, resulting in high rates of ailments such as heart disease, stroke, migraines, osteoporosis, arthritis and joint pain, digestive maladies, stress-related illnesses, and chronic fatigue.
I’ve used it from time to time for sore muscles and skin infections but had no idea it had any relationship with most of the above ailments.
Moderate alcohol consumption in middle age can lower cardiac risk
Moderate alcohol consumption in middle age can lower cardiac risk
The study also identified a subset of new drinkers who consumed only wine. When comparing non-drinkers to wine-only drinkers, drinkers of other types of alcohol, and heavy drinkers, the wine-only drinkers had the most significant reduction in cardiovascular events. Drinkers of other types of alcohol also had an advantage over non-drinkers, but the difference did not reach statistical significance.
I’ve been seeing more and more studies showing the health benefits of limited alcohol intake, especially red wine. While at the health food store the other day I noticed several supplements that were supposed to be the good stuff from red wine without the alcohol. And priced higher than several bottles of wine. 🙄

Is a cup of tea really the answer to everything — even anthrax?
A new study by an international team of researchers from Cardiff University and University of Maryland has revealed how the humble cup of tea could well be an antidote to Bacillus anthracis –more commonly know as anthrax.
Tea, it’s good fer ya…

Evidence lacking on health benefits of drinking lots of water
Guess it’s another one of those “but everyone knows” kinda things. Some days I do and some days I don’t. In the summer I may drink more than that, in the winter probably lots less. I figure as long as I’m still peeing I’m taking in enough liquids… 😉

If you drink regular sodas you NEED to read this. Diet soda is another matter entirely and I ain’t even going there.
FWIW, I will still drink a little Dr. Pepper, 7-Up or Sprite from time to time but only if there isn’t any available water, coffee, tea, fruit juice, or milk. I’d guess that I have had 12 to 16 oz of the stuff so far this year and that was due to needing liquid quick and none of the above being close at hand. The colas and my gut just don’t get along at all.
Thursday down and almost out
Has been a real down and out day. Got up and fixed breakfast, hit the feeds and by 11 was back in bed. Sore throat, sneezing, sore muscles and aching joints and other fun stuff. I am not a happy camper. So far appetite is still ok so am eating and taking in plenty of liquids. House is as warm as it’s gonna get for this time of year till I get the bathroom area finished. Plastic just don’t hold in the heat that well. 🙁
So that’s about it for the day. Have some stuff in the tabs that I may or may not get to looking at/posting about later, just depends on if I stay up much longer. That’s about it until I type again…

And yes, I am inside in the cool playing on the computer instead of outside doing ANYTHING in this heat.
