NewsForge | Hooking OOo to MySQL

This is amazing! Other than that I got nothing yet. Gonna see if NeoOffice has it yet as it’s the only OOo I have on here (iBook).

(Double-checks to see that this is INDEED the article I wish to comment on)

Thank for the link. Saw it somewhere else sometime else earlier this week, and never got there. Now have it bookmarked (looked for a little bit, going to have to FINALLY install MySQL and give it a try-by the time I get around to it, MySQL will have more features than Oracle) and get back to it after school starts and things settle down, I guess. Have SEVERAL things I want to do with My SQL, a few of them involving OOo. (sounds like the soundtrack for a REALLY cheap porn flick, doesn’t it-OOo, OOo, OOo…..You really shouldn’t talk that way-“Gonna see if Neo Office has it yet as it’s the only OOo I have on here.” Shame on you!)

Posted in the “Gee, I’ll be glad when life slows down and I can THINK of programming again” department……

(Love the moderation comment below-it took about 3 seconds for my last comments to post-now, since I said that, this one will disappear forever-what a loss….)

Neo office doesn’t have it. Nor does the only other one available for the mac. Yet another reason to quit farting around here and switch the iBook to debian or yellowdog or something else that’s foss.

The mySQL that is easiest to set up and just get to using is part of xampp available at http://www.apachefriends.org/en/xampp.html for gratis.

The package has apachie, php, perl, mySQL, as well as a slew of other webhosting programs already configured to work together. Designed as a webmasters testbed from what the site says.

It works fine on linix (most) and the mac. Haven’t got a win machine other than Cat’s and ain’t gonna mess with that one to find out how it does. But they do have a version that runs on windows so grab a copy and start futzing around with it.

It keeps everything together in a single folder so removal is a snap. I’ve trashed it several times doing stupid things, but just untar another copy and reinstall. takes about 5 minutes and that’s setting up the passwords to everything too. After you get over the initial learning curve its the easiest server setup i have every seen but even initially the curve ain’t that steep here. You can get as deep as you want cause these are full versions of all this stuff so dig in.

Keep your web directory elsewhere and use a symbolic link to it and away you go. With a laptop I got it all right here with me where ever I am, internet or not. Now to put everything in cvs or some version control so I can update the sites and other machines with a command. 😉
