No surprise to me. Man (mankind, that is) as a general rule, takes the easy way and overdoes everything. This leads to all kinds of shortages, because as a species we lack vision-we are rarely concerned with anything beyond next week, and even next week is a strain, tomorrow is soon enough.
And remember, the Pacific coast native Americans had the potlatch, where the participants would try to outdo each other with excessive giving of gifts-which means they had to amass huge amounts of valuta to give as gifts, all to get better social standing. “Ah, what fools these mortals be….”
