Remounted it, wound the spring enough to get the clamp off. Put on the hands and weight and it started right up. Ticking merrily away now!![]()
Reassembled the mechanisum, only having to take it back apart once cause I forgot to put the spacers on the spring stem.![]()
With the mandatory WW stop along the way. Got back and finished the pivot polishing. Cleaned, oiled, remounted and coiled the spring.![]()
Gulped coffee and breakfast and made the delivery. When helped with customers for 2+ hours. Then did lunch and went and paid some bills.![]()
Started the day polishing pivots on the Sessions while waiting for Coffee. Got a call that I needed to deliver the Seth Thomas.![]()
Now just have to finish rebuilding the case, which is in little bitty pieces, and it’ll be done. Will be a nice, time only, clock.![]()
Someone in the distant past had made a click out of a Master lock key. Was too tall and would bind after a while. Tis much better now. 😉![]()
Had to replace the click and made a couple of spacers for the wind shaft. Next time I order parts will get a new rear bushing for it.![]()
Sessions all cleaned up and other than the main spring ready to go back together. Gonna wait till tomorrow to clean & lube the mainspring.![]()
Coffee is brewing. Decaf at this hour. 🙁 Seth Thomas just chimed the half hour. Within 6 seconds of on time! Not bad for 100+ years old!![]()
Sessions is apart and in the ultrasonic. Korean pos is still ticking. Cornbread is in the toaster oven cooking. Gumbo is done and simmering.![]()
After all, I only have 3 others in various stages of repair at the present time. One more would at least make it an even number… 😉![]()
Looking at the old Sessions that has been hanging on the wall for months now. Need to go ahead, tear it down, clean and check it out.![]()
Pivots all done! Front of Qhut closed up till warmer time (or next clock I have to work on). Supper cooking.
![]()
Got the strike side pivots and one more bushing left to do. Tired of standing in the cold at the lathe polishing pivots so taking a break.![]()
Went ahead and put the time side together when I got all the wheels for it done. Tis hanging on the wall and ticking away now!![]()
Both springs taken down, checked, put back on, and rewound. Figure another 2 to 3 hours and it should be back together and running.![]()
Have polished the pivots on 3 of the wheels so far, and have 5 or 6 more to go. One pivot replaced with 2 more to do.![]()
So I’m fixing it. Took the wheel apart and cleaned the cut teeth up and added a shim to move the bad area out of line with the other wheel.![]()
So the guy with the Korean clock didn’t want it fixed and gave it to me. Got to looking at it and decided to gain even more experience.![]()
Guess I need to call the guy and tell him the good news.![]()
One of the wheels wore the bushing to the point it allowed the teeth to unmesh and then acted like a sawblade on the mating teeth.![]()
As I suspected this Korean clock is not worth the repair. Very poor finishing procedures in the factory. They did no polishing on pivots.![]()
Got a Korean clock torn down and in the ultrasonic now. Not sure it’s worth the time but I guess the experience counts for something.![]()
Sounds of clocks ticking and the buzz of the ultrasonic are almost drowning out the rain and wind.![]()
The Health Risks Of Being Left-Handed http://t.co/oMKyqGNy So now the studies show that us lefties are in our right mind… 😉
![]()
Seth Thomas seems to be regulated to within a few seconds an hour. Working on a cuckoo clock now. Got to order new chains for it.![]()
Which is gonna have to be close enough on a clock this old.![]()
Well took the mech out of the case and after tweeking the fiddley bits this way and that a few dozen times got it within about 30 seconds.![]()
Well, twas on both hour and half hour but the adjustment I thought I could make without taking it all apart didn’t work. So on to plan b…![]()
Correct that last bit. Tis on the minute shaft rather than the hour tube. 🙁![]()
Both is a fairly simple adjustment, but if only one of them, may involve taking the whole thing back apart to bend an arm on the hour tube.![]()
Problem it’s having now is the hour strike is about 2 minutes after. Waiting for the half hour strike to see if they are both that far off.![]()
Trying to finalise the repairs on the Seth Thomas clock. Getting closer. Have the movement in the case and in beat or close to it.![]()
Cleaned the woodburning stove firebox out and rebuilt a fire, then fixed supper. Been browsing and reading feeds in between doing stuff.![]()
Managed to get the arse outside before sundown and get the legs for the 2nd stool done. Somewhat chipped the top down but still more to do.
![]()
Compared to Winn Dixie they are not bad. WW has them beat on most stuff. Trying to get the initiative to go out and do stuff. Failing…![]()
Stopped at WW on the way down and then at Publix on the way back to see what the prices looked like. Compared to Foodland they be high.![]()
Back from the southland. Twas a fairly quick trip, just down to take stuff to Cat’s mom and pick up some other stuff.![]()
Trailer unloaded. Rest of firewood cut, hauled, and stacked. Showered and soon heading south to deliver stuff we forgot to take Saturday.![]()
If the rain holds off long enough tomorrow morning, I want to cut a tree to make a pole lathe out of. If I can still move when I get up. 😉![]()
Drilled the leg holes and got one leg somewhat round and almost ready to drive in place. 3 more legs and a little more smoothing and done.![]()
After getting the load back a friend came over and we sat a talked a bit so while sitting I split another stool seat out and flattened it.![]()
Cat hauled and stacked while I cut. Afterwards had to make a trip to get milk. Then supper when we got back. Am somewhere past beat.![]()
Was dark or getting that way when we got to the point of unloading so rigged a light and then cut about half the load into firewood lengths.![]()
Got a trailer load of wood drug back to the compound. Mostly 6+ foot long pieces of cedar. This stuff has been dead for 15 to 20 years.
![]()
Somewhere in there also did a bit more work on the ST clock. Think I have about got it in beat and chiming at the right points now.![]()
Or as much as I can get in the daylight I’ve got left. Also restacked the existing firewood piles and put tin on top for the coming rain.![]()
Cleaned the deck of the trailer of leaves and crap from last year. Am beat. Yet am heading to the woods to cut a trailer full of firewood.![]()
Sharpened the chain on the chainsaw. Cleaned it’s air filter and filled oil and fuel. Added 4 gallons of fuel to the tractor too.![]()
Cleaned the fuel filters out and added some oil. Changed the off the rim trailer tire. Aired the tractor and trailer tires up.![]()
Guess I’ll take the rest out and bore them through so they all match. 😉 Charged the tractor battery and got it started.![]()
Split 4 more smaller pieces and made the legs. Drilled the 4 holes with the hand auger and pounded the legs in. Went through with one. 🙁![]()
Long day already. Split the remaining log rounds in half and moved to the 10×20. Split a piece off of one and made a stool seat.
![]()
Filed square holes in 2 brass cup washers to mount the minute hand so it doesn’t flop. Still ticking very nicely. Half hour chime correct.![]()
That done, maybe I can sleep now. Or at least in a little while as am now gonna have to unwind a bit… 😉![]()
The bent part was in the levers. After it all looked like it should work, it did! Have now oiled it and it’s ticking happily away.![]()
Couldn’t stand it. Went back to the clock and figured out what had to go where in the gear train and then what had to be bent and how much.![]()
Gonna call it a night and start on it again in the morning. Maybe it will be magically working when I get to it tomorrow… 😉![]()
And since this was part of it’s problem when it came in, the pictures I took when disassembling it don’t help much either. 🙁![]()
Got a book on it but the pictures it has don’t show the critical linkages clearly enough to help.![]()
And with stuff bent when I got the clock. Think I have most of it back aligned and straightened but may have to see another one to be sure.![]()
Got the clock back together. Now trying to get my head wrapped around the strike stop portion. Nothing like gears and levers out of sync.![]()

![]()
Now to take a few pictures of the cleaned and repaired pieces and then start the reassembly process. After a cup of coffee and a walk.![]()
Just got the last piece of the Seth Thomas out of the ultrasonic, washed in alcohol and dried. Got another movement in cleaning now.![]()
That’s start over after taking all I had put on off as well as removing the rest of the old. Have got one coat back on & drying now.![]()
Remembered I should have used hot after adding cleaner. One of those days. Put another coat of shellac on too soon and had to start over.![]()
Figure it will take another hour to get up to temp as I used cold water when I filled it. 🙁![]()
Got the ultrasonic cleaner cleaned out, filled up, and a new lid made. Tis sitting on the bench a few feet away making buzzing noises.![]()
Got to move the ultrasonic cleaner in here after I clean it up/out and do a final cleaning on the movement parts. Then put it back together.![]()
First coat of shellac on the damaged spot in the clock case. Gonna take at least 2 to 3 more coats but looks like it will work fine.![]()
Up. Coffee made and being consumed. Suprisingly able to move without much pain this morning. Unlike last night when it all hurt…![]()
Trying out the newest version of #! LiveCD. So far so good. Fast and fairly lean.![]()
literaryflack: Happy 125th Birthday to writer Rex Stout http://t.co/HY3NvcGk![]()
When split each round is more than a wheelbarrow full of wood. Am much more sore tonight than I was last night.![]()
Am at the point in the trunk that the 18″ bar on the chain saw is not going all the way through so am having to cut from both sides.![]()
Got most of the remaining log rounds split, moved and stacked today. Think there are 4 left to do, along with another 20-25 feet of tree.
![]()
Religious Simulacra at Cheap Prices! Unlike ordinary toasters ours toast Jesus on your bread http://t.co/SBb4xRYa LOL!!!![]()
To have the pieces to finish off the other pending clock repair. Will try to remember to get on that after cleaning the bench.![]()
Now to move on to cleaning up the work bench so I can finish at least one of the clock projects. Which reminds me that I need to order bits.![]()
Got it all measured, weighed, mixed and sitting on a shelf dissolving. Looks about right so hoping it’s the right mixture.![]()
That’s what I’m gonna try anyway. If it works great. If not, haven’t wasted much of either alcohol or flake shellac.![]()
Finally figured the ratio was 1:4 for a 2lb cut (thinking its the dense problem this am). Think that means 1/4 oz. solid to 1 oz. liquid.![]()
Not sure if I am being dense or if most folks don’t mix small amounts. Need to make up small batch of shellac, having trouble finding how.![]()

![]()
Hoping it will let me finish splitting the rest that is cut tomorrow. If either of us can move. Which the way I feel now is a possibility.![]()
Have a not so nice lump about 6 inches below my left knee that quite is painful, both to touch and to walk on now that I’ve slowed down. 🙁![]()
Still more than that that is cut but has to be split. Only one mishap and that was splitting a round that bounced into my leg.![]()
This am sharpened & prepped the chain saw & started cutting wood. 5+ hours later, I’ve cut & split & Cat has hauled & stacked 2/3 of a cord.![]()

Figure by the time I get it cut down and ready to put the axe head on I’ll be way too tired to even try it out. Getting close now…![]()
Got it roughly axe handle shaped. Now to get the rest of the curves cut out and take it on down to comfortable size for my hands.![]()
Took a tree about 5″ in diameter that I cut down last fall and cut a 3 foot section out of it. Split 2 sides off and been shaving it down.![]()
Dilbert comic strip for 11/29/2011 from the official Dilbert comic strips archive. http://t.co/l35VRkcc LOL!![]()
Tis not shaving sharp but good enough to put a handle in and see how it will cut. Gonna eat lunch (warming on woodburner) and go back to it.![]()
Then rough ground the edge on the grinder and then moved to the flat stone, which I had to reflatten from previous sharpenings.![]()
Then spent about 30 minutes with the handpowered grinder with the coarse stone cleaning up the back end from sledge hammer blows.![]()
Bought a single bit axe head a while back and decided to clean it up and make a handle for it. Got the old handle piece driven out.![]()
Fire is keeping the place much warmer than the last few weeks with the electric heater. Been outside working and came inside to the tropics.
![]()
Have it out of the way of the stove but need to move it around some more to get things to feel right in there. Then on to other gottados…![]()
Started the first fire of the season. Feels and smells quite nice. Still trying to figure out the layout for the furniture in the room.![]()
Pipes cleaned, elbow replaced, ashes from last fire of the spring removed and hauled outside. Cut up a piece of heart pine for kindling.![]()
Took the outside elbow out to clean the pipes and found that it had a hole rusted in it. Which necessitated a trip to Lowe’s for a new one.![]()
Decided since it was getting quite cool out, that it was time to clean the flue and fire up the woodburner.![]()
Then I can get the ladder in there and take a closer look. If I last that long. Right now want to crawl back in bed and sleep the day away.![]()
Still don’t see where the leak is originating from. Got a couple of more trees to take out after lunch/resting/warming up.![]()
One of those jobs I have been dreading for years but as 2 of them are dead and the others are dying tis time to clear them all out.![]()
Got the path cleared into the section between buildings and have started clearing out the smaller trees. Looks like all the pines gotta go.![]()
Sharp axes cut SO much better. Looks like I’m gonna have to put a handle in this one soon though. Glad I got the shaving horse fixed.![]()
Had to come in and cool off/rest for a bit. If I don’t collapse will try to get back out and at least finish the path/road into that area.![]()
Got further than I had figured I would. Even found a end section of scaffolding that I had lost far too many years ago.![]()
Not a project to start on a wet cold day. Will see how far I get prior to total exhaustion. Think it’s time to charge the tractor battery.![]()
After a bit more of a rest. Still got a lot more brush to clear but need to clear the entire side as some of the big pines need dropping.![]()
After I sharpen the axe or put a handle in the other axe. Or work on the chainsaw and sharpen the chain. Think I’ll start with sharpening.

Maximum dirt and sweat seems to keep folks at a reasonable distance. 😉![]()
Need to go out and get milk but am not sure I want to brave the crowds or not. Think I will finish digging the firepit and then go.![]()
Afterwards cleaned up an area between the 2 shelters and have been digging a new firepit and reading one of Roy Underhill’s early books.![]()
Had to replace 2 legs, both side pieces of the clamp, the clamp hinge pin, and the base adjustment block. Then made a new small axe handle.![]()
Got one of the emt rafters bent correctly and been doing other stuff since. Got enough of the shaving horse rebuilt/replaced to use now.![]()
Really hoping to get them all shaped, cut to length, and put up today. Just depends on my energy level which is quite low at the moment. 🙁![]()
Cleaned out the 10 x 20 and remarked the pattern for the emt ribs that are the vardo’s roof supports. Got one close to shape.![]()
Planning on using it out back for a fire pit. Now to find the energy to dig out a flat spot to set the blocks and pan in.![]()
Got the trash barrel moved to the field where I dug a pit last week, which frees up the stainless steel base I had it on.
![]()
Back from the overindulgence of the day. Trying to get up the energy to do something productive but so far unable to do so.![]()

Whichever will see about moving more stuff in out there on Friday. Also going to go with a 30% off sale on the booth items till Christmas.![]()
If not then will see about doing something on Friday. Other option is to finish some of the pieces in progress here in the living room.![]()
Got to get more shelves moved into the back booth. May try to build some tomorrow afternoon depending on when we get back from Turkey day.![]()
Got 2 additional shelving units put up in the front booth. Added a rod and hung jewellery in the case. Moved a table out of the back booth.![]()
Day in the barrel is done. Not sure when I will be working there next. Other than in our booths. Got a fair amount done with them too.

Lightening to the south of us but from the radar it looks like most of the rain is over for the evening unless more pops up.![]()
Center leg made and installed on bench. After 1 broken screw and 1 assembly mistake. Was gonna leave the screw but had to take it apart…![]()
Going to take 4 on each end of the camper roof. Have 2 done so far. Then get to start cutting the 6″ and 18″ pieces to deck the overhangs.![]()
Fit with less than a 1/4″ to spare. Now to clean up the mess, add one more leg in the middle and make the rest of the scalloped roof ends.![]()
Already had a 2×4 at 32″ off the floor where the bed will be so added one on the long side by the door and sat the workbench top on them.![]()
Got to thinking about the workbench top fitting (lengthwise) into the camper and went back out to look at it.![]()
Looks like this is gonna be the pattern for the rest of the afternoon and on into tonight. Wanted to get more done outside but not to be.![]()
Finished just as the bottom fell out again. Got inside and it quit though the weather map shows us getting soaked. Coming down hard now.![]()
Got the awning down and tis a wall again. Moved the workbench top into the camper and it just fits. Moved a few more pieces of wood in too.![]()
I need to go and drop the side awning on the 10×20 for the coming wind and rain event. Looks like I have a few minutes till next rains here.![]()
Got the tools and assorted crap that had accumulated on the 8′ bench outside the camper cleaned off and stuffed inside just as the rain hit.![]()
Put up some shelves under the awning on the side of the mobile home the other day to stack shorter pieces of lumber on. Added a tarp today.![]()
Got the piles of scrap lumber cleaned out from under the camper. Got the pile of long stuff moved from in front of the camper.![]()
So I still haven’t finished cleaning the wood scraps from under there. Time for another cup of coffee and back at. Roof is next project.![]()
Decided to run the wire in the center channel of the frame instead of conduit. Finished it a lot faster and didn’t have to crawl underneath.

Which I meant to install prior to putting down the flooring but forgot about till it was too late… 🙁![]()
Think it’s about time to clean the piles of scrap wood out from under the camper so I can get under there to hang the light wiring conduit.![]()
Wired the adapter and light connector on the truck, so that part is done. Got to find more wire to finish hooking up the trailer lights.![]()
Got the safety chains, now got to figure out how to mount them securely. Made brackets and mounted the trailer lights.![]()
Ball mounted on truck, and hopefully tight enough. Coffee on and about ready. Going to salvage safety chains from boat trailer.![]()
Trailer coupler is now fixed with all new moving bits from new coupler I got at the flea market for less than the price of the repair kit.
