Light fixtures made from old CRTs – Boing Boing

Not sure whether to cringe due to the toxicity or applaud the ingenuity. Tis interesting either way I guess.

*** esprit cabane, the magazine of crafty & green living ideas

A really neat French magazine (now in English too) that has all kinds of projects and craft ideas with a focus on homemade and non-toxic. From how-to’s on making wallpaper paste and rice glue to upholstering furniture and making your own paint they cover a wide range of projects for anyone interested in doing it yourself.

I was surprised to find that glazers putty was simply a mixture of chalk power and linseed oil. They give the proper mixture and explain how to use and the curing time.

Good stuff! 😎

This dude does some seriously cool work with found materials. I love the concept! Gonna have to play with some of the crap in the piles at the barn (as soon as I get the welding tanks filled).

The Sietch Blog » Reduce Reuse Recycle (In That Order For A Reason)

Not a bad article. Makes lots of sense. The video is great! They make two different chairs out of cardboard. Worth a look if you’re into recycling at all. And if you’re not then you should be…

Camper plans

By , September 23, 2007 9:06 pm

Been working on a camper the last few days. Decided to go ahead and build one out of the crap I have laying around here at the ranch.

Started off with stripping an old popup camper that has been weathering since the mid 80’s. Got it stripped down to the frame and remaining good plywood decking. Cut two new front corners in a right triangle 11 inches x11 inches, out of old pallet corners made of 3/4 inch plywood. Ground off the remaining screws where the plywood had rotted, so am starting with a pad about 6 feet by 7 feet. Am going to have to add a piece almost 3 x 6 feet at the back to cover the entire floor. That gives me a total area 76 inches by 120 inches to work with. Below are scans of the drawings I made of the basic floor and elevation plan for that floor area on separate pages:

Both floor and elevation plans on same page:

Will try to get pix of the floor and frame and assorted materials asap.

This is an interesting bike cart/carrier. And with a bit of conduit, a conduit bender, an old bicycle, 2 front wheels, and an arc welder I think something like this could be built in less than a day. Gonna have to spend some time collecting the bits together to make one. I could use this for moving just about everything under 250 pounds or so that I now have to use a truck for here on the farm and at no cost other than developing my leg muscles. Looks like time to get off my ass and at it…

Home Composting Made Easy (TreeHugger)

Interesting method of composting kitchen scraps. Makes me want to build that kiln, start digging clay and build a potters wheel. After the heat breaks I may just do so. Been wanting to/talking about it for years and at this age if I’m gonna I best get started.

The Temas Blog » “Ecological Bricks”

New post about building with PET bottles/product waste at the Temas blog.  Keith as always has a good writeup with links to other sources (mainly in spanish but google or babel fish translate fairly well) and info.

I’m thinking of trying a wall section (or two)  of PET 2 liter bottles in the roundhouse I am building.  Been wondering how they would work with cobb as a binding agent.  No time like the present to find out.

I can see a huge retrofit market for this product.  And a large DIY market as well.

Tube Lines – Any old iron? Disused tube carriages being turned into studio space

Very good reuse of old rail cars.  Would like to see more pictures of the process as they modify them into studio and work space.
