The Seattle Times: The genius behind Linux cherishes his anonymity

Interesting read. Bit of a glimpse into his personal life. But I don’t think that there is a difference between his work and personal life after reading this…
Nero Wolfe
Working on my Nero-Wolfe covers site. Got WordPress installed and finely configured. Some of the category settings gave me fits but finely figured out where to change them. Setting up a category for each title. Not sure if that is the right way to do it or not but figure it will do for now. And that will allow me to get all the stuff i have now in there and can sort it out later. Yea right. Has taken me over 2 years to get to this update…
Bought 5 more domain names today too. Got murdertheywrote.com and .net, deathondemand.com and .net and nero-wolfe.net. Got the hosting set up. Now to build the sites. At least got to get a redirect page up to point to bluespringsbazaar.com as murdertheywrote.com and .net, deathondemand.com and .net are going to be book sales sites.
Back to the mines…

Haven’t spent much time on this site but it looks interesting for teachers if no one else.
New Scientist Breaking News – String, mud and bamboo make a quake-proof house
“Most of these houses are do-it-yourself, and we’ve never quite grasped the enormity of the practical side. The new technique has a huge potential application in south and central America, central Asia and India,” says structural engineer Michael Griffith of the University of Adelaide, South Australia.

The above is taken out of context but sums up what I have seen as a problem with BIG science and BIG business, for quite a few years.
Where a poor man looks at what is here and available and cheap or free a consultant or scientist studying the problem thinks about what is available with corporate funding or grant money and how the [ house, crop, fence, water supply ] can be replaced or redesigned to work better.
Big gap between one and the other.
I have a problem with using old or making do even when new is available. Would rather use mud than cement. Or new cement anyway.
I like the idea of tying or bracing the adobe walls with bamboo. I have seen pix of 3rd world slums where something similar was done. They had build with old brick (it looked like) and used bamboo and wire or rope (or whatever they could get) and pieces of corrugated tin to sandwich the brick in between. Not quite the same concept as drilling the holes but I suspect that hovel was cooler/warmer than the ones around it made with just tin, packing crate scraps and cardboard.
Study says drink beer for the health of it
Studies published in the organization’s Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry reveal that some food found at baseball games and other sporting events contain compounds that are good for the body.
The studies found that sunflower seeds lower blood pressure, beer reduces the risk of a heart attack, sauerkraut fights cancer and onions prevent osteoporosis.

If you are offended by my harsh language….sorry ’bout that chief. I ain’t done with this blog and chances are it may or may not get more harsh as I continue. It just depends on how pissed I get as I think about it.
The down-and-dirty synopsis…Linux developers are starving to death so they have to get “real†jobs. Now, before you go thinking that I am attacking this author, stop right now. I really like this guy and he is doing what he thinks he needs to do in order to help. I hope it does help, because here and there he has a valid point…but before you go passing the hat for homeless software writers, give me a chance to tell my side of it.

Stupid Online Advertising, Part 12,459 | Bayosphere
A local fitness company is running an advertisement on the Chronicle’s site. It covers the top of the article, and there’s a little “X” in the corner that supposedly lets you remove the ad.
But after repeatedly clicking it and then having the ad reappear, I want to urge the Chronicle to try something else. I have no problem with online advertising. But this is beyond annoying.

Been there and done that and didn’t go back.
These news outlets need to learn that the internet is a big place with easy access. Not like the local newspaper which used to be the only game in town. When I run across one of these sites I make a mental note to not go back for a while. Most of the worst offenders learn in a short while or seem to as the offending popunder/over/in the middle of is usually gone by the time I forget about it and go back. Sometimes not but as I said the internet is a big place and most news isn’t just at one place any more.

This looks like a useful tool. Certainly one to bookmark with the hurricane coming in who knows where. Took a pen and laid over the path and what shows timeline wise on this map seems to be going in a straight line for New Orleans. Hope they are boarded up good…

I think I have pointed to this article before. Just found it from a link and reread it and felt it needed to be pointed to again. Well written and informative.

Confidential Sources
Asking investigative reporters to work without the ability to keep sources confidential is like asking a special prosecutor to do his job without the power of the subpoena.
In the case of “outed” CIA agent Valerie Plame, this reality has obviously escaped the comprehension of a fanatically zealous special prosecutor, Patrick Fitzgerald, and a judicial hooligan named Hogan – Judge Thomas.

Seems to be a ground swell of this kind of thing lately. Interesting how it seems to be in counterpoint to Bushinator camps rape and plunder the enviroment for the quick buck. Glad to see it.

Now this makes a lot of sense. Also means that those weeds in the yard are doing the same thing. So by not cutting my lawn I am doing a double triple good thing. I’m not using the lawnmower which uses gas and produces pollution but I am encouraging the growth of natural air and soil purifiers to counteract others polluting ways. Yep, that’s the story they all get from now on when they bitch about the tall grass…
