dreamstate – Currently ranting about PC World
Refund for me! PC World buckle to the pressure.
—
Looks like PC World backed off and gave him a full refund! Great to hear that public/internet opinion made a difference in this case. What’s so bad is that it took this long and this much bad publicity to get anything done. Maybe the next time someone comes in with a similar problem they’ll just fix it and shit can the “Linux is installed so you got no hardware warranty” attitude…
Microwulf: A Personal, Portable Beowulf Cluster
Interesting little cluster! This link via email from Steve who is at work and can’t post. Thanks Steve! Love the Monty Python poster on the wall behind the desk in one of the pictures! Cool stuff!
Awoke this am to a non functioning iBook hard drive.
After a while with a bottle of ice applied to the outside of the case got the temp down enough to get it back running. Shortly after that went down again. Been having problems with this drive off and on for a while so decided to boot from the external firewire drive. Again with the ice and after a while got it up and going on external drive. Which is what I am running on now.
Guess I will try to replace the internal drive with the broken 80 gb drive that “someone” has left here for a while. Not looking forward to the surgery at all. From what is shown at http://www.sterpin.net/uk/ddibookg4uk.htm it looks to be a real pain in the arse. No real rhyme nor reason for them (Apple) to have used 3 different types of screws nor as many of them. Nor is there ANY reason (other than designer stupidity) for the hard drive to be this difficult to get to. But it is and I bought it so I get to try to salvage it.
If I am back on today that means either I decided to continue running on the external drive or I managed to get the internal replaced and going. Or I decided to see if I could get the Linux box back up and going. Or something.
Not a good day for this for me either mentally or physically but computer breakdown wait for no one to feel better…
Brass Goggles » Blog Archive » Mr Quentin’s Remington Keyboard Mod
And one final one (for today anyway) from Brass Goggles with the leather covered Remington Keyboard Mod. Cool concept.

Zonbu: Green doesn’t have to make you Blue!
Steve pointed me to this new computer and while it looks interesting there are several things I wonder about.
First and foremost, what happens when the company goes under or their servers go down?
In their info limited site they say that it has a state of the art OS that is immune to virii they never say what kind of OS it is. The office productivity suite is the Sun Open Office package.
On board storage is 4 gb (i think) which is not much OS wise these days.
Price isn’t bad and the subscription pricing for online storage and OS updates is not out of sight either.
However interested I might be I wouldn’t bite unless I could use my own network storage and they don’t say anything about that in the site. Or at least I couldn’t find it. I wish them luck.
The processor is an AMD Geode(tm) NX 1750+ running at 1394.898 MHz. Or that’s what the pclos info tool shows. As far as what kind of machine, it’s a damn if I know. 😉
Seems to be a no name assembled with assorted parts, mouse and keyboard are Harmony multimedia products.
It just finished reformatting the hard drive and installing PCLOS on it. Now for configuring. Back when I am running from the hard drive.
PCLinuxOS: Downloads
Just finished downloading BigDaddy 0.93a and am burning it to cd now. Have a new computer with XP home just itching to be removed from it that I am gonna use in place with this one. Not quite state of the art but at 1.5 ghz is better than the 1 ghz that the one I am now on. The new one has 512 mb memory so will upgrade that a bit. Also has a built in dvd burner. May have to add a cd burner, will see if the dvd will also do the cds first though. 80 gb hard drive. Onboard video though also has a video card slot. May move my present card depending on how it does.
Just finished burning and is checking now. Closer and closer to bye-bye XP. 😉
Teenager moves video icons just by imagination
Getting closer to no moving parts in the input control for computers. Much closer.
Slashdot | Zune’s Viral DRM Will Violate Creative Commons
So they not only introduced a new av player but Viral DRM at the same time. Total stupidity. But it IS Micro$loth… 🙁
Inside Your Notebook’s Battery: Ordinary AA Li-Ion Cells
Just got a note from Steve about this link and noted that the author has posted a correction on the site. So if you missed it the first time you get another chance. If you read it the first time go and read it again to see the correct info. Good read!
Thanks Steve!
Inside Your Notebook’s Battery: Ordinary AA NiMH Cells
Interesting idea, but the money hungry boys and girls in accounting won’t like it. Takes the propritary bit out of the power situation. Can’t have that now… 🙁
Silent Convective Water Cooled PC – Pumpless and Fanless

This dude has made a REAL homebrew water cooled computer using mostly parts from Home Depot for the water cooling. Really neat stuff!
