Or however frustration expressed in a loud voice is expressed. 👿 Been trying to install and configure Ubercart for several hours now and am almost there I think. Still not sure what I did or didn’t do to begin with but must have been something or there was a glitch at one end or the other or somewhere in between.

Tried installing it just as I had on the test site. Created the database and user and input the information and after what appeared to be a good install told me that there was a problem that might be corrected by installing again. So I did. And got a page full of errors about weird stuff in the database. So deleted the database and recreated it. Ran the installer again and it seemed to work. Went to the site and it was there. Then started customizing and configuring it. Got an hour or so in and it sent me to a page that wasn’t there. 404 big time. OK, lets try again. Same thing. Went elsewhere and started configuring the cart it’s self. Got it about done and then noted no payment gateway. So went to the modules and there they were but not turned on. Turned the ones I needed on and submitted and got another 404. Did it again and again (trying different selections each time) and same thing. big BAD 404. 👿 So found a update script and ran it to get hit with errors out the wahzoo. Decided to try adding the modules in again and it worked. 😯 Have no idea how or why. But am gonna continue to continue, or keep on keeping on or try to go forward in some fashion anywho.

Coffee breaks over, time to return to the inverted position… 🙄

Scribus :: Open Source Desktop Publishing for Linux, Mac OS® X and Windows®

Other than a bug that causes a crash on closing in OS X 10.3.9 (which is the one I run) seems to be a good program. Not doing much (or any right now) DTP any more but if I do this is the program I’d use. Love the Linux, Mac, Winblows cross platform.

Saturday morning this and that

By , January 12, 2008 10:30 am

Almost ready to go and start beating on the Toyota fender. Still got half a cup of coffee to finish and keep hoping this head ache will go elsewhere. Nothing I did last night (at least I don’t think it is 🙄 ) but more a sinus kinda thing. Been stopped up and sneezing all morning. Had to fire off the wood burner again last night due to the colder weather so that may have something to do with it.

Been looking at content management systems again. Drupal is looking better and better. Got a test installation up and just installed the e-commerce modules to try them out and it really looks good. Gonna have to spend a few days with it to get my head wrapped around all of it’s quirks but I’m thinking of using it at the Too Many Books site instead of WordPress since I am more interested in the ability to sell product than just blog about it and none of the e-commerce plugins that I have tried for WordPress have been even close to what I wanted. Time and ease of use/modification/data entry will tell.

Coffee is getting cold, fingers and arms are already sending little signals to the brain that they have had more than enough of this morning typing thing, and the Toyota awaits so will close this ramble for the nonce and get the arse in gear (first gear anyway… 🙄 ) and get at it. More later. 😎

Tux Untangled: A Gateway Distro That’s Easy to Use

Tux Untangled: A Gateway Distro That’s Easy to Use

If the current trend of folks bringing laptops to the games and logging onto the network/internet continues I may have to try this out. Would entail getting another computer to do the job but guess that’s the price of fame.

From the article looks like it would be nice to use even with just us online.

And then we have to do one more thing to get it to work…

Decided to do some scanning that I have been putting off. Went and got the scanner and plugged it into the iBook and the HP director program tells me that there is no scanner attached to my computer. Check Google and there are no drivers for the mac. Now I remember why I had it hooked to the Linux box. 🙁

So decide to move enough stuff to get the linux machine going in here in the warm. Well that is gonna entail moving 2 desks, 7 chairs, one big table and the computer and assorted stuff like monitors and keyboards and mice and several boxes of crap that is sitting on and around said stuff.

4 hours or so later after moving everything and figuring out where and how to set it all up, the Linux box is almost finished updating after the move and getting turned on for the first time in about 3 months.

Cat had been wanting a LCD monitor and since I wasn’t gonna use mine I told her we’d swap them. Which we did this morning before the scanner bit. So I had to reset the size and type of monitor. Not a problem. Usually. Thing is the vertical freq was set too high for the monitor I now have. So I can’t see anything but an out of range message. Get switched to another non X console and swap the old config file for the new bad one and reboot. Tis all good again.

Finally get all the settings right and decide to update the OS. Forgot how long it had been. 411 mb of new files later, it’s still installing them. Been at it better than half an hour after getting it all downloaded. Looks like it’ll take another 30 minutes or so longer. Then I can see if the scanner is gonna work with the new gimp and sane. And maybe get back to where I was going this morning at 10 or so…

DBP – David’s Batch Processor

Though named David’s Batch Processor it has nothing to do with me but that I use it. Tis a super handy batch processor plug-in for gimp. If you use gimp and need to modify large groups of pix check it out. Fantastic program. Has saved me many hours of tedious hand adjusting in just the few short weeks since I found it.

Shrook v2.6 released

Shrook v2.6 released
One final note: Mac OS X v10.3 is no longer supported.

Shrook was about the last piece of software I paid for the use of. I mainly got it because at the time it was the only (or best/easiest anyway) way to read feeds from different computers and be able to keep up with read/unread feeds on them all. Then not terribly long after I paid for it, the author changed the way he charged for it, and instead of charging for the software, started charging for the usage of the site that allowed for the cross platform/multi computer usage. He did roll the payments for those that had paid for the program into the first years site fee so I can’t really complain about that. I still quit using it as I started spending more time on the linux box and less on the mac. If I was still using it (and paying for the service) this bit about v10.3 not being supported would be the last straw.

I quit supporting Apple’s stupid DRM lock-in in any financial way (no iPod or iPhone in this here house folks!) not long after I bought my second iBook G4 and am as a result still using OS X 10.3.9 which is locking me out of quite a few updates to software I use on a daily basis. I’m leaning toward Slackintosh for my next iBook OS update.

To get this post back on reading feeds, I like (and use) the Google feed reader. I keep looking at/debating the software giant vs the small software author question, but the ease of use, cross platform availability, and (most important to me) not having to have anything but a current browser to use, no matter where you are or what machine you are on, makes it the way to go for me.

Just my $0.02 worth/rant for the morning. Sorry Shrook…

Glitch Renders ‘Virtual Fence’ Unusable

Sounds like it’s being developed by Micro$oft and running on Vista…

And yes, I take every cheap shot at them I can. Been years since I have run it and I still get pissed off every time I have to sit down at a windblows machine.

Foxmarks

I haven’t tried this yet but plan to. It allows one to use a single set of bookmarks on all the machines you use no matter where you are. Mozilla only (I think). Hope the actuality is as good as the concept.

Linux.com :: How to create poster presentations with Scribus

Another blow against overpriced publishing software. I’ve tried Scribus before but not in a while (but I haven’t needed to do any layout or print work in a while either). Guess I will install it and try it again just to see how much it’s changed.

Gambas – Gambas Almost Means Basic

Interesting looking programming environment. Just saw a reference in TiraEcol, the comic that I posted a link to earlier today, and looked it up. Turns out that PCLOS has it in the package manager so have installed it. Now to see if I can figure it out and then see if I remember ANYTHING about programing in BASIC.

freshmeat.net: Project details for Frog
Frog is a tool for publishing and maintaining contents on a Web site. It is a rewrite of Radiant CMS and features an elegant user interface, flexible templating with layouts, snippets, and flexible page parts, a simple user management/rights system, search engine friendly URLs, password protected live administration, and support for Textile.

Another bit of software that I am somewhat interested in looking into further.

TreeLine

TreeLine
What is TreeLine?

Do you have lots of sticky notes lying around with various useful information jotted down? Or many lists of books, movies, website logins, personal contacts, or things to do? Can you find them when you need them? Well, I often couldn’t. So here’s my answer.

Some would call TreeLine an Outliner, others would call it a PIM. Basically, it just stores almost any kind of information. A tree structure makes it easy to keep things organized. And each node in the tree can contain several fields, forming a mini-database. The output format for each node can be defined, and the output can be shown on the screen, printed, or exported to html.

For what it’s worth. Looks interesting enough to try. Just got to get off my ass and do so…

Linux.com | Feed your content cravings with Liferea

Trying this as my new feed reader. Good interface but a few small glitches now and then. Restarting the application seems to clear the problems up. Biggest complaint is that the scroll bar on the feed articles area in the upper right box disappears at random. Or seems to be at random. Will keep on using it for a while and see how it goes as otherwise I like.

This looks verrrrry interesting. Gonna have to try it out and see fer me self but from what I seem to be reading tis just the ticket for folks that use more than one machine. Suspect the bad part is gonna be having to install the os on each one but have only skimmed the first page of the site so far.
