Groklaw – Court Rules: Novell owns the UNIX and UnixWare copyrights! Novell has right to waive!
Hot off the presses: Judge Dale Kimball has issued a 102-page ruling [PDF] on the numerous summary judgment motions in SCO v. Novell. Here it is as text. Here is what matters most:

[T]he court concludes that Novell is the owner of the UNIX and UnixWare Copyrights.

That’s Aaaaall, Folks! The court also ruled that “SCO is obligated to recognize Novell’s waiver of SCO’s claims against IBM and Sequent”. That’s the ball game. There are a couple of loose ends, but the big picture is, SCO lost. Oh, and it owes Novell a lot of money from the Microsoft and Sun licenses.

So glad that it’s coming to an end. Biggest waste of the court system in many years. Now let the SCO bashing begin in earnest…

Virtualize Windows on Linux? Microsoft Says No Way! – Marcus_Soperus – Maximum PC

Got their head deep in the sand… Looks like the reporter misunderstood what Microsoft spokepersons said. Glad to see that they are starting to work with and not against (as much anyway from the sounds of this revised article) the other kids on the block.

Absolute Home

Think I will give this a try on an old machine and see how it does. Still waiting on the spirit to move me to reinstall/repair the PCLOS install on my main linux machine but with the heat making outside or anywhere except in airconditioning unavailable to me, may take a while tomorrow afternoon and play with another os/machine.

If you run Mozilla (and you really should be doing so) this add-on is a MUST! If you want to escape from all the damn moving pictures and flash adds out there anyway… 😉

The Register: The Home of the Mighty BOFH

As per the previous post here is the BOFH current year index page with the latest posts as of August the third. Enjoy!

The Register – Odds and Sods: BOFH

By , August 6, 2007 4:12 pm

Well I have been missing getting my BOFH fix for some time now but as I have been using a feedreader to check for new posts I figured I was just missing it seeing it in the mass of posts on the REG everyday. However I have switched to reading my feeds through the google reader (thereby making my feedreading portable and not tied to a single computer) and decided to see if there was a feed for Odds and Sods instead of having to wade through the hundreds of posts a month on the main feed. Anyway, I went to the REG site and found that there was a Odds and Sods feed, so I subscribed. After noting that the latest BOFH was posted on Aug. 3, I went to the google reader to make sure that it was there. But the BOFH posts were still not showing. So I tried going a bit deeper at the REG site and below is what I found:

The Register – Odds and Sods: BOFH
The Register – Odds and Sods: BOFH
Biting the hand that feeds IT
BOFH not available in feeds
Thanks for your interest in the Bastard Operator from Hell. Simon Travaglia, the author of BOFH, has asked us to remove links to his articles from our RSS feeds. We will not restore the BOFH RSS feeds without his permission.

Damn if I can figure out why but it looks like Simon Travaglia has got a problem with RSS feeds or something. So now I get to delete all of the REG links from my feedreader and try to remember to go to the site every week or so and see if a new one has been posted. If I didn’t like the humor so much I’d just say F#*$ it and forget about it, but for now will post links here on the blog for the newest stuff as it shows up, and I find it. Even though it is a REAL pain in the arse to have do so…

Zonbu: Green doesn’t have to make you Blue!

Steve pointed me to this new computer and while it looks interesting there are several things I wonder about.

First and foremost, what happens when the company goes under or their servers go down?

In their info limited site they say that it has a state of the art OS that is immune to virii they never say what kind of OS it is. The office productivity suite is the Sun Open Office package.

On board storage is 4 gb (i think) which is not much OS wise these days.

Price isn’t bad and the subscription pricing for online storage and OS updates is not out of sight either.

However interested I might be I wouldn’t bite unless I could use my own network storage and they don’t say anything about that in the site. Or at least I couldn’t find it. I wish them luck.

Extended Desktop

Extended Desktop

If you’ve got an iBook and want to use an external monitor at a different resolution along with the existing builtin display this is the program for you! Am sitting here using my Proview 19″ widescreen LCD (1400×900) with the main Firefox window open on it and Skype and another Firefox gmail window open on the iBook 14″ (1024×768) screen. NICE! Tis really a shame that Apple decided to disable some of the capabilities of the iBook via firmware to make the PowerBook more desirable.

For those interested in trying Elive 1.0 but unwilling or unable to send a donation to pay for the right to go to the download page, a torrent is available via the link above. Remember to keep seeding after you finish the download. Enjoy!

Update – This is an older copy that has some problems and a different md5 sum from the current version. I am still looking for a good copy to try out…

Elive – Are You Ready for a New Linux Experience? – Where Debian meets Enlightenment – Softpedia

But it’s NOT truly free if it REQUIRES a donation to be able to get to the download page. Don’t care what the article states, the author of the article needs to change it to reflect that a donation is required to get to the download page of the iso. And I’m not gonna pay for a linux distro that I can’t try first.

Microsoft: We patch faster than Apple, Novell and Red Hat – Computerworld UK – The Voice of IT Management

Yea, and the check is in the mail…

I’ve read what the article states but I still wonder what this supposed study is based on. Is it total actual exploits fixed or just the ones that they admit to? Seems like the numbers don’t make a lot of sense with Winblows having 90 patches and apple 129 (?) etc. But then depending on HOW you slant your data you can make anything mean anything you want. Show all the data and results and then we’ll talk…

freshmeat.net: Project details for Frog
Frog is a tool for publishing and maintaining contents on a Web site. It is a rewrite of Radiant CMS and features an elegant user interface, flexible templating with layouts, snippets, and flexible page parts, a simple user management/rights system, search engine friendly URLs, password protected live administration, and support for Textile.

Another bit of software that I am somewhat interested in looking into further.

TreeLine

TreeLine
What is TreeLine?

Do you have lots of sticky notes lying around with various useful information jotted down? Or many lists of books, movies, website logins, personal contacts, or things to do? Can you find them when you need them? Well, I often couldn’t. So here’s my answer.

Some would call TreeLine an Outliner, others would call it a PIM. Basically, it just stores almost any kind of information. A tree structure makes it easy to keep things organized. And each node in the tree can contain several fields, forming a mini-database. The output format for each node can be defined, and the output can be shown on the screen, printed, or exported to html.

For what it’s worth. Looks interesting enough to try. Just got to get off my ass and do so…
