Rust removal by electrolysis

Getting more and more cast iron cooking stuff and need to clean it up. Found a post on the Teardrops and Tiny Travel Trailers site that linked to the above site that shows and explains how to do the deed with washing soda and a battery charger. Looks to be just what I need as it claims to remove paint as well as rust and other crud. Gonna have to try it this coming week as I now have 7 pans, pots, frying pans, lids, and other pieces that I need to clean. Will try to post pix of the whole process.

Toy Oscilloscope

This is just too cool! I’ve got a couple of the display tubes and I think all the other tubes down in the barn. Gonna have to dig that stuff out and see about building one of these just to have. Great stuff!

Candle Heater

Candle Heater or the way he (miss)spells it, KandleHeeter. Cute but really…

Not sure about these inventions. I remember the heat stick from way back when, but it was another one of the neat ideas but just not sure it was worth the time, energy expended, space taken up in the room type devices.

Gonna have to get some flower pots and make one of the Kandleheeters just to see if there is more heat given off by this device than just the candle alone. There are laws about this stuff if I remember my physics right but it may be that some of the radiant energy is converted to heat via the ceramic pots and metal screw, washers, nuts combo. Time and experimentation will tell.

The greenhouse is interesting. Kinda reminds me of one I built back in the early 80’s that was just too small to be of much use but the one I built was a standup inside unit with an isle in the middle whereas his you raise the wall to work with the plants.

Teardrops & Tiny Travel Trailers :: Index

Don’t think I have posted this link before, but I have been spending quite a bit (and maybe too much) time there since finding it. It is THE place for info and help on building your own teardrop or tiny travel trailer! They have lots of plans and a whole bunch of scans of old mag articles on building your own camper. Huge forum with build pix and a super nice bunch of folks. Check them out!

Portable Tool Table

Portable Tool Table

Interesting design for a table to mount hand power tools on/in. All wood and hardboard design with a few screws and fiddly bits of metal here and there to mount stuff. Looks interesting. Also looks like a cheap way to outfit a woodworking shop. I’m thinking that making something along these lines for each tool. Just takes up a little time and a bit more space.

Scytheconnection: Welcome

Located this site via a post at Treehugger.com. They have a lot of info on scythes, from how to use them to how to make your own handles. Guess I’ll pull that blade I had for sale at the yard sale tent, clean it up a bit and make a handle and some mounting hardware for it and start using it. Neat site!

Power Your TV, Cell Phone, or Laptop by Pedaling (TreeHugger)

Whereas the video of him playing the video game isn’t that thrilling, the concept that he proves will work with is rather interesting.

The high speed start up is what keeps me from using an old stationary bike for this. Problem is the wheel is too small. Could use a smaller pulley on the alternator. May look and see if a knerled sleeve would fit over the alternator shaft where the pulley mounts and try for a spring loaded drive right off the wheel. That might get the speed up enough to self energize. Will have to do some math and see how close I can come that way.

blog gnist org – Synergy – two screens, two OSes

Have read about (and may have even posted about) synergy before but never tried it. Tis a good read and he does several things to ensure that no one snoops. Good pointers and code to go with them. When I get another monitor (ain’t giving my flat screen/iBook dual screen setup up) for the linux box and get it back up and running I’d like to try to set it up like this dude has done. Nice!
