Bits and bobs about this and that

By , September 13, 2007 11:45 am

Awoke this am to find a large number of hits on this site. Turns out that Morris, the fellow with the broken hinge mount, noted my comment on his problem and put a link to it on his site. Thanks for the link! His site can be found at http://www.dreamstate.eu/ for those of you who wish to follow his ordeal.

Also awoke to find that the update I did at The Nero Wolfe Site had managed to break most of the picture links, which is a BIG thing on that site as it is mostly dealing with the cover art of books in the Nero Wolfe series by Rex Stout. So after trying it figure out what I had done originally to get them to show up (2+ years ago and my memory is much like swiss cheese but with more holes) I went back to the old theme (which had displayed quite broken yesterday) and for some reason it worked right off. Had to add some of the new tracking code and scripts in here and there, but considering what I had done to get the pix to show up in the first place and what I would have had to do to get them back in now, tis no biggie. I’m gonna leave the old theme in place for now and just start redoing the entire pile of covers on another of my sites in a sub domain. Hate to loose the work and the domain but that one is coming up for renewal in Dec and I ain’t gonna spring for another year. Just ain’t worth it as there has been NO income from the site in the entire time I have had it online, so fark it…

I’m trying to decide what path to take on the new site. I want to sell books on it as well as showcase my collection but I don’t want to limit it to just the Nero Wolfe series so I need to decide on whether to use blogging, content management, e-commerce, or what kind of software. I’m more comfortable with WordPress but adding the code to each post to sell via paypal can be a bit of a bother. But the amount of crap that you have to go through to get the data into some of the other programs can be worse so gonna have to cognate a bit more on it. Comments and ideas are more than welcome.

Both of us have been down with something (still or again, not sure which) after having a couple of days getting things done. I’ve been mostly house bound and doing nothing requiring being upright for the last 3. Cat is doing the bed thing today. I’m upright but just barely. Guess I will post this and then go unlock the far gate so should anyone need to get in they can. Then will most likely come back and poke at the computer some more.

Long time down

By , September 5, 2007 11:05 am

Went out and got a pile of plywood scraps this past Saturday with Steve’s help (Thanks Steve!). Then started feeling crappy again that night and have been back in the house and mostly under the covers since. I’d been feeling pretty bad for most of the week that Cat had been gone, then when she came back from Texas she had a bug which I got to sample. Not fun. Starting to come back to life a bit I think. At least am able to think a bit again and not wanting to sleep all the time which is a major ++. Not gonna push it, though there are piles of things that need doing around here. Figure if I am still feeling fairly good tomorrow, will try to get to working on stuff at the yard sale site again.

Got a few interesting things in tabs which I’ll try to post today/tonight as I feel up to it.

One of those days

By , August 28, 2007 11:28 am

Awoke this am to a non functioning iBook hard drive.

After a while with a bottle of ice applied to the outside of the case got the temp down enough to get it back running. Shortly after that went down again. Been having problems with this drive off and on for a while so decided to boot from the external firewire drive. Again with the ice and after a while got it up and going on external drive. Which is what I am running on now.

Guess I will try to replace the internal drive with the broken 80 gb drive that “someone” has left here for a while. Not looking forward to the surgery at all. From what is shown at http://www.sterpin.net/uk/ddibookg4uk.htm it looks to be a real pain in the arse. No real rhyme nor reason for them (Apple) to have used 3 different types of screws nor as many of them. Nor is there ANY reason (other than designer stupidity) for the hard drive to be this difficult to get to. But it is and I bought it so I get to try to salvage it.

If I am back on today that means either I decided to continue running on the external drive or I managed to get the internal replaced and going. Or I decided to see if I could get the Linux box back up and going. Or something.

Not a good day for this for me either mentally or physically but computer breakdown wait for no one to feel better…

Too hot out

By , August 15, 2007 4:48 pm

But starting the cool down for the day. High here was 107.1 F at about 4:10 pm. Tis 4:41 pm now and has cooled to 104.7 F. I ain’t going out till it drops below a hundred. Just way too hot for me right now.

Worked over at the store trailer till noon sorting and alphabetizing books. The progress is slow but I am trying to get 2 or 3 hours a day in over there doing something. Will try going over later and seeing how hot it is at least. Not sure that I’m gonna do any more over there today though. Suspect I need to get up at or before daybreak and work till noon to get more done.

Course tomorrow is a yard sale day so will be over there with that. Doubt that we will have many if any customers but we did saturday even as hot as it was. Figure we will close it down at about noon. Just way too hot in the pm.

Called it a day due to the heat

By , August 6, 2007 12:28 pm

Will work on separating and sorting books over here (at the compound/dwelling) till almost dark and then try going back over to BSB (Blue Springs Bazaar or as I have previously called it, the yard sale trailer) to try to finish the last of the shelving in the library room.

Spent a couple of hours over there this morning starting the process of sorting and rearranging the books. Can’t even decide where the categories need to be till we get the basic groups sorted to see how many of what there is. For now I am not even working with the hard backs other than getting them on shelves so they can be seen.

And that’s not to mention the religious books that are still in boxes. Seems like there are 10 or 12 boxes of them that have got to be shelved somewhere.

The area that was the bathroom is soon to be gutted and walled with shelves. I think we can house around 2500 volumes it that area. But first we have to figure out where to store the stuff that is currently stored in there.

Bit by bit I think we’re making some headway but it’s painfully slow. Not to mention painfully hot right now which makes me move a LOT slower than normal.

Long hot days

By , August 3, 2007 10:47 pm

Been cleaning, fixing, moving, stuff and building and rebuilding the building that is housing it. Books are a real pain when you get as many as we have. But at this point we can’t seem to keep from getting more and more of them. Current rough count on the books on shelves inside the yard sale trailer (which is an old 14 x60 office trailer that I have somewhat gutted and lined with shelves from end to end) are paperbacks 2200 and hardbacks 900. Still need about 40 liner feet of shelving to display them all. Have 25 feet or so of paperbacks that are double stacked but by sliding the front stack can you can see what is in the back. Awkward but works.

Got the first wall of the shelves done in the book room yesterday late. There are 8 rows of shelves about 9 feet long that are 4 inch boards and meant for paperbacks. One shelf around the entire top of the room is complete and on the long walls (about 10 feet long) made out of 12 inch wide 3/4 inch plywood on one side and a 1×12 on the other. The two 9 foot wall shelves are 1×8. Will post pix as soon as I get the cam found (long story – but short form is moved computer station and screwed up something on the main computer so moved to the iBook for main machine, and cam and all the other stuff from the desk top where it was in now in boxes and somewhere in the clutter in the compound somewhere) (and yes that is the short form). Total length of shelving is about 110 feet so far. Planning on doing all four walls so discounting the 3 foot wide door in one 10 foot wall should have about 400 feet of books in the one room.

One more note of interest (to some anyway, maybe), so far the only cost I have in the shelves is that of the screws. Cat went and bought 8 founds of assorted sheet rock screws and spent a little over 17 dollars. I may have used a half a pound so far. With tax the screws cost $1.07 a half pound. I figure to use another pound total on the rest of the shelves so will have a bit over 3 dollars out of pocket. Wood is pallets and crates and such that would other wise cost these folks to take to the landfill. Good wood too.

Got a yard sale going right now too. There are several hundred books that are out there too. Along with a lot of other stuff. Keep getting queries for things we don’t have but some things that we do also. Other folks just look and say yall got a lot of stuff!

Aside for Steve, Sue, and Aaron. Remember the blue and white stripped swing set of Aarons that you gave me, lo those many years ago? We are using two of the side legs to support a metal frame and canvas tarp over part of the sale area. 😉 Thanks for the junk folks!

The hands, arms, and brain are about done in so will close for the moment. More as time and energy permit.

Pieces n bits

By , June 19, 2007 5:13 pm

Been working on getting some of the books in order. Talk about a tall order. At this point I can’t even begin to guess how many titles we have. Most places on the shelves they are stacked 2 and 3 piles deep and in NO order what so ever. And the shelves are all full. So one of the next steps is to figure out where I can put more shelves. Right now I have been moving titles around to try to get the most prolific authors titles together. And even that is not exactly true as I have only been working in two or three rooms. Haven’t even started in the most crowded buildings where the majority of the books are stored. Just in the living areas where I would like to be able to find things. But as the saying goes “The journey of a thousand miles starts with the first step” so this seems to be mu first step in this madness. If energy allows I suspect I may finish sometime about 3 years from now. More as it gets done…

Making big pieces out of small ones

By , June 3, 2007 4:56 pm

Sitting out another shower in the Registration Office.

Been working on another small building for Tim to use as a sales stand. This one is built out of scraps and more scraps.

Floor is plywood and osb scraps screwed to 4 foot long 2x6s set on 16 inch centers supported on two outer ends by 10 foot long osmose 6×6’s and in the center by a osmose 2×6 on edge. sections are joined by pieces of plywood screwed to to the sides where the 2×6’s join on the 2×6 upright.

Walls are 1×4 shipping frames put together in a lego fashion with a 4 inch overlap between them. Harder to discribe than to do. Again screwed together.

Front side posts are osmose 4×4’s 8 feet long. Or one of them is. The other is made of two pieces cut so they could be overlapped a foot and then screwed together.

Takes longer to build out of pieces and scraps but the only expense to date on this is fuel to get the materials, and cost of the screws.

Wall covering and possibally roof covering will be the plastic the other buildings are coated with. A bit of caulk and the roof seams should be quite tight.

Will be interesting to see how much can be done without additional funds being spent.

Still sprinkling a bit. So glad to see this rain. It’s started to settle the worst of the dust. Just need a few inches more of slow stuff over a month long period to bring some of the plants back.

Some of what I/we have been doing lately. For those that might be wondering…

Down time

By , May 4, 2007 11:49 am

Been going at it a bit too much in the heat I guess. Am not having a good day today nor did I have one yesterday. Suspect it’s just my summer problems showing up a bit early. Sipping on a cup of herb tea and trying to get up the energy to do something.

Bill and I got Cat’s old 8×8 storage building moved to it’s new location down by the creek yesterday afternoon. Gonna use it as the registration booth for the airsoft games. Supposed to have an open play game Saturday May 5 (tomorrow) but not sure how many folks will show as we haven’t advertised it much.

Been trying to get some of the buildings up for the upcoming big game on May 26. Got one entire wall (8 feet high by 12 feet long) and part of two more up on one building. Piles of material but no energy to get more done right now.

Gonna take some lie down time and try for at least a little productivity this afternoon.

Long week

By , April 13, 2007 9:14 pm

Been trying to get some of this backlog of work caught up. Bug seems to be mostly gone. Still weak and prone to the dizzys but that is mostly allergys I think.

Been working on Aarons car for most of the week. Got the crank drilled out and threaded. Had already machined the pully alignment ring into a groove and then turmed a brass bushing down to fit eh grove. After drilling and tapping the crank had to turn the inside hole on the pully out to fit the new bolt. After fitting it into place there was still a wobble so took it back off (belts and all 🙁 ) and noted the belt guide had gotten thickened while being hammered with the loose crank pully. Turned that down and then finished it off on the belt sander. Put it back in with a different bolt and then tightened all the belts and cranked it up. Or tried to.

Finaly got Bill to crank and hold his foot on the gas to look at the wobble or lack thereof. Almost totally gone. So now to the no run at idle problem. After 3 days off and on and much knashing of teeth and rending of (whatever the hell you rend) something got the wiriing checked out and a couple of problems fixed and the 5 different vacuum, air, and fuel recovery lines hooked to the proper places. One vacuum port capped off as it should be instead of going ot the vacuum sensor. 8 different cracked rubber lines replaced. The aluminum oxide removed from the distribitor cap. The carb cleaned and blown out. It now runs.

Would have taken it out and around the farm but it now needs another 2 quarts of transmission fluid. Guess I will jack it back up and check the pan bolts as soon as the rain passes.

Got the back doors working at least from the inside. Gonna pull the inside panel from the one that isn’t working on the outside and fix that too. Almost ready to put up for sale. Should make some high school or college student a fair little car. Still needs a steering rack but the one that is there works well enough. Just leaks some.

Hoping to get the cars and crap moved out of the way for the new entry to the airsoft parking lot in the next few days. Next game is April 21. Info at Operation Impending Doom for those interested. Would really like it to be ready for the traffic then.

Got to looking at the old futon frames. Think they will make excellent gates. Or quick and dirty portable baricades with the addition of a couple of feet. Just want something to keep honest folks out anyway.

Still kicking

By , April 5, 2007 10:21 pm

Just not very high or hard.

Still got the crud of some kind and having a hell of a time getting over it. Hand is better or was. Used the chainsaw today and it’s been hurting a bit this evening in retaliation I think. Rash is still quite bothersome. Started on a sea salt and epsom salts soak today and 5 hours or so after the first soak it’s a lot less noticeable and not near as itchy as it has been. Still using calimine lotion on all the broken out areas and cortizone cream on the worst. Still thinking it’s some kind of fungus or mold as it gets worse (much worse) after the temp gets up to where I start sweating. More I sweat the worse it gets and itches. Will see how the salts soak does after a few days.

Hoping to do a bit at the forge tomorrow. Will see how I feel when the time comes. Not gonna push too hard after nearly 3 weeks down. The few minutes I spent with the chain saw did me in today but we had to have wood since the temps are a bit on the chilly side. Got it up to low 70’s in here right now. Not sure what the outside is here but it’s 42 in Weaver and 45 at Angel Station so could be 38 to 45 here. Sometimes it’s colder here than either of them as we are about 400 feet from a creek at the bottom of several hills.

Gonna try to get another load of firewood in tomorrow. Then need to start cutting the smaller stuff up to make charcoal with. Want to try to get the 24 inch (I think) blade that Tom brought me mounted on a 3 point hitch frame to drive off the tractor pto to use as a cutoff saw for small stuff. Wonder if I can figure a way to make the frame pivot so I could use it as a brush saw. Or general cut off saw. Guess if I put it on a old bushhog right angle drive or maybe a car rear end and set it up to cut horrizontal or vertical it might work. Gonna have to give it a bit of thought. May need to be 2 seperate machines to be safe. Though what’s safe about either of these things? nothing that I can think of. With a rear end if you drive at the axle then you get the increased ratio from the drive shaft side. and there is the nut on that side also for mounting the blade on. Bit of cutting and welding and it might just work. Use the entire rear end and lock the brake hub on the side away from the pto drive and no cutting or welding would necessary. Make for a larger unit but don’t see that would be a problem with a cut off saw anyway. Or use a front wheel drive transmission and use the gearing for blade speed selection. That also gives the posibility of using the macfersion strut assembly for the blade mount and vertical travel is only limited by the arc of the cv joints. That will be more than enough for a cut off saw.

Rambled on long enough. Will continue this in another post if it looks feasable in the light of day.

Sick and quite tired of it

By , March 25, 2007 12:43 pm

Got some type of bug. Started friday night and had me down all day saturday. Today isn’t much better but am tired of lying down so until meds take effect am upright or some imitation of it.

Still using SamLinux on liveCD. Steve, you asked for more info on it, but best way to get that is to download the iso from http://www.sam-linux.org/ and try it. There are some things that don’t seem to work but I figure it’s mainly just me not being able to think too clearly right now. Planning to install it to a hard drive and see how it does from there. But not today…

Took the bandage off my hand just before lunch. Swelling is gone down and most of the pain is gone. Can poke and prod the area with out wanting to scream now anyway. Not totally healed but well on the way. Would be at the forge if not for this bug.

More when I feel up to it.

Bits, pieces, parts, and parcels

By , March 23, 2007 10:08 pm

Still among the living. Hand much better. Seasonal heat depression starting early with increased early heat. Still out doing things instead of hiding in ac.

Buffett on the speakers. Different os runing via liveCD at the present. Trying the SamOS which is a pclos flavor without gnome or kde but XFce4 and runs on slower equipment with lower ram requirements. So far other than a few learning pains I like. Actually closer to the mac than linux in some ways. Nice.

Safety first, after the fact

By , March 17, 2007 12:41 pm

Gonna be interesting typing this with one hand, but as the other one is the reason for this post, don’t have any choice.

Had just finished forging out a stainless steel hook and went in to buff it out on the wire wheel. Got the outside done and was thinking about a safety article I had read a few weeks age about not using uncovered wheels and what they could do to the body when I got the tip of one side taken out of my hand and then imbeded in the meat at the base of my thumb about an inch deep. Not stopping to think, I pulled it out, cut the grinder off and then looked to see how bad it was. Not good is putting it mildly. Put pressure on it and came to the house, which as Cat is out with her mom, was locked up. Took pressure off it for the time to find the keys and try to find the proper key showed the bleeding to be rather rapid. As I couldn’t find the key for that door, went to other door and bled all over the stoop while opening it. Washed the wound out with tap water ane used a towel to apply pressure while locating bandages and antiseptic. taped the hole up till the bleeding slowed then put the antiseptic on it and put a couple of bandaids across it. Wrapped the towel over the whole thing and went back down and put water on the fire in the forge. Then walked around a while trying to get a handle on the pain. Back in and wrapped the hand with an ace bandage as the shock was wearing off and the muscles around the entry point were now screaming really loud. Made a couple of phone calls trying to get in touch with a friend who is a nurse and trained as a emt but no joy. Left a message for him and tried laying down but that just made it hurt more. So back down the stairs and added a strap to support the arm at waist height and then sat down to type this. Pain is still quite intense, but abating some. Not feeling like passing out now anyway.

No more wire wheel brushing on this stuff without guards in place for me!

Gonna go and see about some lunch so I can take something for pain.

Thursday – pieces and bits

By , March 9, 2007 9:27 am

Didn’t feel like doing much yesterday (thursday) due to allergys flaring up, so fired up the forge and piddled all day and into the night.

Started off with making hooks to hang a temporary shovel and rake for the forge. Took 1/4 inch rod (old electric fence post) and split it a couple of inches on one end, formed a T out of it, then rounded each half of the T crossbar and hammered them to a point then curled them and bent to catch the handle of the tools. Flattened the other end and bent over to hang in the holes of the forge legs. Then ate lunch and went back to repeat for the second hanger.

Been needing some hammer holders so made 4 large staples and pounded them into the anvil stump and hung hammers.

Had started another pair of tongs several days ago but not finished them so as some of the dizzys had abated at this point decided to try to get them done. A couple of hours and lots of beating, heating, cussing, twisting, bending, and more beating they were done. Or as done as that pair will be. They work and that’s the main thing. Not real pretty (though with opposing twists in the handles) but serviceable.

Supper was eaten right before finishing them so after they were done started on a candle holder just to try them out. Started out with the rest of the electric fence 1/4 inch rod which was about a foot long. Heated one half and hammered to a square. Reversed, heated the other half and hammered it to square. By this time the rod was too small for the new tongs so switched to the old ones and continued to heat and beat till I got a square rod about 16 inches long and about 3/16 in cross section. Then pointed one end and started bending. Got the bends about like I wanted them (at last) and rather than start with the drip dish called it a night. Will try to finish it later today. Still gonna heat and distress the metal a bit more as the square rod turned out too nice and factory looking finish wise. Pinged the edges a bit but needs more roughness. Gotta watch making stuff look too good.

Will try for pix of some of the stuff later today or tomorrow. Airsoft game tomorrow but I ain’t cooking so will see what the weekend brings. First cuppa tea is finished and numb hands/forearms are getting the better of me while trying to type so will close for now.

Shed move, the easy way

By , March 8, 2007 11:17 am

Decided it was time to move the shed that I built nearly a year (or more) ago to where I had planned to put it at the time. Figured on little or no help so got out my trusty MF135, a couple of 12 foot long 2x10s and some rope. Moved the stuff the airsoft crew had left in it and drove the tractor into position and put the boards in place front and back. Front was on the front bumper and back was on the scrape blade.

getting ready to move the shed

Tied everything down.

tying it down

And away we go.

here goes nothing

Worst part is over as I get it turned and make it under the power line without snagging anything.

around the corner and under the wire

Half way there. No hands style… 😉

look ma no hands

Almost home.

Almost home.

Now to back and fill a few times to get the tractor out.

Tractor coming out.

Bill, Cat and I each take a leg and after a pivot dance get it into place. New home sweet home.

new home

Since this was the Combat Ranch registration stand I had to put up another one. So I did…

New combat ranch registration tent.

Spent yesterday running wiring and getting lights and power put in. Got to put in a hood and then hope to fire the forge later today. Guess it’s time to get it in gear and do it. That’s all for now…

Bits and pieces

By , February 24, 2007 8:30 pm

Been a bits and pieces kind of week.
Today started with cutting a foot or so off a old desk leg (1 inch square tubing with a screw adjuster on the bottom) and using it to tighten the belt between the air compressor and motor. Checked and then changed the oil in the compressor. Also drained and refilled the oil in the forge blower. Much quieter now, both of them. Had to regrind the tip on the good but broken largest flatblade to get the screws out. And had to make a small funnel to refill the compressor. Sequentially yours…

Decided to finish the hot cut hardy as the copper wire is now done. Broke and cut the guide wings off and ground the edges down and got it ready to weld. Clamped it in the big pipe vice and cranked the welder up. Welded the tip to the pipe then put a square sleeve around the base and welded the top edge to the pipe. Went to test fit it in the hardy hole and noticed how bad the edges were.

This is a real POS Anvil Shaped Object but its my POSASO so decided to see if I could weld to it. I think it’s cast iron as it came from the foundry down on 22nd or 23rd street in anniston, al where they make them. Anyway, moved it and its stump around to the front of the barn and ground a bit on the rough edges and cut down to clean metal on all the really bad and pitted places. Ground a bit on the horn and hooked the ground electrode there, got a hand full of 6011 rods and cranked the welder up. Welded fine. Took some fiddling with the control to cut the arc down enough to keep whatever kind of metal it is made of from running/burning away from the added metal but after getting the feel of it was able to weld it fine. Got some copper pipe and flattened it then bent it to fit the hardy hole and put it in there and welded up to it. Managed to melt it a couple of times and have to tear it loose, but got a nice upper edge without having to file and grind the inside. Ground the surface down a few times and refilled low spots. Filled in a couple of other places in the surface and one bad one on the edge. Over all looks much better. Will know more when I work on it again.

Moved it back to the side of the barn and then cleaned the forge out. Sifted the small sand and chinkers out and put the bigger pieces back in.

Took a break and went to the campsite to look at things there. Decided to use the tractor and do a bit of landscaping. Spent the remander of the day cutting a ditch and dropping the level of the ground on the west side of the roundhouse to reroute the water into the creek from the lake rather than the into the crossing which is causing so much erosion. Should know tomorrow when the rain gets here whether it is sloped enough or whether I need to do more.

At dark came back to the barn and put stuff up before the rain gets here. Looked at the shinny new surface of the anvil and got a old vcr case that beat it into a cover for the top. Should keep the rain off anyway. 🙂

Spent the past couple of days clearing the woods between the old trailer and bills bus. Trying to get it clear enough to move the cars from the field to a new temp resting place while they wait to be stripped and recycled. Still got another day or so to go with the clearing but need to wait a day or two before fighting the tractor again. Am hurting but not as bad as usual. Hope this able to work spell lasts a bit longer.

The 2 days prior to that was mostly spent digging cans out of the mud and briars down in the field. Got 2 to 3 loads left and hope to get them gone first of the coming week. Cleared some of the area down there with the tractor and scrape blade already but got a lot more to go. Digging stuff out of the muck and vines that have been there for 20 years. Some of it is still usable.

The past few days have included a bit of computer/electronics work and also cut up some more wood from fallen trees for heat. Got about 4 or 5 more keep a roaring fire all day long type days worth in the wood room and another 3 to 4 weeks worth waiting to be cut up. Hope that will finish out this heating season.

Arms and hands are giving out so will close for now.

Another day that was

By , February 15, 2007 9:01 pm

Well the problems that I thought I was having with PCLOS 2007 TR2 was actually a combonation of motherboard and cdrom drive in the computer I was using as a test machine. Still not sure what the motherboard or processor problem is but tis trash now. Not that I broke it but it’s in pieces to be recycled. Not worth the time or trouble to try to fix it so got another even slower machine and moved the hard drive into it and had boot problems. So put the cdrom drive in it and it wouldn’t boot from the livecd. Put another cdrom drive in it and booted fine so reinstalled to the hard drive and everything is fine. Guess the cold was too much for it/them. Took several hours to determine just what was going on as everything was working (kinda) last night but wouldn’t boot this morning. Hate it when that happens!

Even with the cold I got out this afternoon and did a bit of work at the forge. Finished grinding and polishing the bottom fuller so tongs are next. Got the jaw on one half twisted over and the next fuller indention done, part of the hinge shaped and the next indention down the handle made before it got too dark to see what I was doing. Got to find the camera and I wll take pix of the pieces. Know it’s around here somewhere… 🙁
