The blog is back up and seems to be working fine for the moment anyway. Still not sure what the problem was other than after making a couple of posts from outside the post page (as in I was using an old javascript toolbar posting tool updated to this page location) WordPress nor phpMyAdmin couldn’t access the database. When I submitted a trouble ticket the only response from the tech was that the database was now accessible. Which helps me figure out the problem not at all.
There seem to be a fair number of folks having this general problem with the 2.5.1 upgrade but no response from the folks on the WordPress forums other than to delete and reinstall the database and all the WordPress files including the plugins and templates.
Will see how it goes and hope for the best. I have removed and reinstalled all the files on the site but have not wiped and reloaded the database as it all seems to be working now.
Have also read some things on the webhost forum that indicate similar problems with other sites dealing with maxed out connections causing things to go down. Guess this is part of the Microsoft server infection. I checked the error logs last night and they were showing that there were hundreds of error messages showing up per hour.
More as I find out about it…
Just after I posted last nights entry I noted that there was a new WordPress out. Downloaded it and installed it this morning. Looks good so far. Will see if it got rid of some irritations as soon as I upload a picture.

And it looks like that problem is fixed. As well as another one dealing with positioning. Looks good! But on posting this, the picture was still not centered, just in the wysiwyg editior so that bug is still with us and actually worse as the editor now lies. Win some loose some…
The above picture of the burning snowman cookie mold is from the FX Cuisine site which I mentioned in an earlier post.
Been here at it since around 8 am and I just noticed it’s after midnight now so I think it’s time to go to bed and start again tomorrow.
Got to looking at one of the sites this am that still had over 900 mb of space taken up when from what I could see should have only had around 450 mb used. After poking around a lot found that the old SpamAssassin had the other 400+ mb squirreled away in a white list file and some other stuff that had expired years ago. Deleted it all and whole site is a lot faster now for some reason… ๐
Got 2 more domains for a client and set a site up. Now waiting for the DNS to propagate so I can set their site up. One will be parked on the other and at some point will have another to part there as well so will have com, org and net tied up. Am now working through the awful code that Website Tonight put out that the old site was built with. Tis some of the worst stuff I have ever seen. HTML Tidy throws pages of errors when I run it on the stuff. Getting it close and letting it go for now. Gonna rebuild the entire site in wordpress anyway but need something up asap. This way I can take some time and get the wp site right before going live.
Tis far too early in the am for as early as I started this am and I am beat. Till tomorrow…
SWFTOOLS
If you ever have the need to rip the text out of a Flash .swf file, swfstrings from this set of command line tools it the one to use. Or the only one I have been able to locate for Linux. The text will still need a LOT of cleaning up but tis better than having to type it all back in. It doesn’t say in the docs but a | (pipe) does route the output to the text file name out put in. Good stuff!
Been cleaning up some old sites yesterday and today. Found an email account on one of them that has been unchecked since it was created back in 04 that had over 65000 emails in it. Took a WHILE to get that one emptied. Was supposed to have been set to dump the stuff into /dev/null but wasn’t. I wondered why I had to keep increasing the allotment on the site size but figured that the boss was doing something and just kept upping it when he wouldn’t be able to get his email. Needed some more room for a couple of new sites and started looking at where the space was going and found this account that had over 400 mb of stuff in it that no one was checking.
So after that fun many hours, got to looking at other stuff that needed clearing out and updating and am still at it. Started at around 8 this morning and tis nearly 11 pm now. Tons of folders and old files left from before I started back in 99 I think, and we have moved servers either two or three times. Just stuff that got copied over cause there was never time or energy to clear it out. Or something. Just finished downloading several hundred folders of crap and as soon as I get another few hundred am going to burn them all to cd as a backup just in case there is something that we need in the future…
While these files finish downloading and then burning, I think I will check email and read a few feeds and when it all finishes call it a night then start again tomorrow. Till then…

The Quest For Every Beard Type – Jon Dyer’s Blog
This is one of the most unusual and long lasting pursuits into assorted beard growing I have run across. Interesting endeavor. And quite cool! ๐ Says he who has maintained a beard (mostly just through not shaving at all) since the middle of September, 1975 (if memory serves), which if I am counting right is 32 years and 7 months. ๐
Handbook of hardware pinouts, cables schemes and connectors layouts @ pinouts.ru
For hardware geeks. This site has more info on cables and connectors than any one place I have ever seen! Great stuff!
Looked at the 20″ Acer on the Wallyworld website again this am and they had dropped the price to 184.88. Decided to go out and about and see what was available in the stores around here. First stop was at J’ville where they had the same one as online but the price tag was 228.88. Pass. Next stop was the one in Lenlock. Same thing. Had them in stock but 228.88. Southward we go. Next stop Office Max. I had tried their website and the prices were higher than Wallyworld so this stop was just to verify what I had seen online. Well I got a shock! They had a 22″ Soyo for 199.99 and a 20″ for 169.99 among others. All sale prices but still. The 22″ was a hundred dollars off! Went next door to Circuit City to take a quick look and went back and got the 22″. Added their 1 year screw it up and they still replace it warranty for another 25 bucks and walked out 250 poorer but with a super nice monitor. Model is MT-NI-DYLM2286 for anyone interested. Wallyworlds online price is 229.88. So glad I didn’t end up getting one through them.

And it’s got built in speakers. Not the greatest but they’ll do, and I don’t have a pair taking up desk space anymore. ๐ ๐ ๐ Now I just got to get busy and do some website work to pay for it… Tis late so am gonna do just a bit more reading feeds (on my nice new BIG monitor) and then call it a night. Till tomorrow…
Tectonic รยป South Africa adopts ODF as a national standard
After all the BS about OOXML here in the states and in Europe, I’m glad to see that South Africa has made a sane choice and is making ODF the national standard. Good going guys!
Victorian All-in-One PC | The Steampunk Workshop
Jake von Slatt does it again.รย This time with a 24 inch flat screen.รย Interestingly enough the one he chose is the same brand that I picked up today, a SOYO, though I ended up with a 22″ model.รย Still a super nice monitor, especially for the price.รย But mine doesn’t look quite as nice.

David Hembrow, basketmaker – Wheelie shopping basket
I really like this design. Gonna have to try making one for myself.

Title about says it all. Today was one of those days that just never came together. Lots I needed to get done but little that got accomplished. Hopefully tomorrow will be more productive. Till then…
U.S. Border Patrol goes Big Brother in Washington State – Boing Boing
J. T. Glover says: “This is an article from the Seattle Times about how the U.S. Border Patrol is questioning U.S. citizens traveling within the U.S. (from island to mainland) on the grounds that some of them might be terrorists. When pressed, a deputy chief patrol agent for the area admitted that anyone stopped who refuses to answer questions–as is their legal right–is let go. Clever terrorists escape, citizens are inconvenienced, and an unknown amount of drug smuggling or illegal immigration is halted.”
Just a matter of time till the old “Your papers please” won’t be a joke. And it doesn’t catch terrorists.

Not sure whether to cringe due to the toxicity or applaud the ingenuity. Tis interesting either way I guess.
