Supercharge Your Camera with Open-Source CHDK Firmware – Wired How-To Wiki

Supercharge Your Camera with Open-Source CHDK Firmware – Wired How-To Wiki
Digital cameras have powers beyond what is immediately available to the user. On a standard Canon, for example, the fastest shutter speed option offered is 1/1,600 second, but the hardware can handle much more than that — up to 1/60,000 of a second.

CHDK, the Canon Hacker’s Development Kit, is an open-source software project that can be loaded on cameras using Canon’s DIGIC II or DIGIC III firmware platforms. It unleashes new features including RAW file format, live histogram display, a battery readout, and the ability to run scripted actions on a camera.

CHDK does not replace the existing firmware on your Canon, so the process is completely reversible. The existing firmware stays intact, while the CHDK software is loaded on demand from an SD card.

Makes me want to get a Canon camera and try this. Sounds quite interesting.

Rather interesting design. I like the green roof and chains directing the water runoff from the gutters. Simple and effective.

Navajo Nation to Lose Internet Signal

I would post something about the above link but the information contained in it will go away in 15 days because it is an Associated Press feed and the copyright statement that they use on every one of their stories that I have copied and pasted below says I can’t.

© 2008 The Associated Press. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten or redistributed.

You’d think that by now they would see it would benefit them to use a less restrictive license so folks would point to and talk about their stories but I guess when the company is run by the bean counters the bottom line is everything.

Anyway to get to the point of this too long gripe, because of this I don’t and won’t post any links to any story by the AP.

Oatmeal cancer claim questioned
A book by government health adviser Ane Bodil Sogaard says oatmeal contains acrylamide, which has been shown to cause cancer in laboratory rats, the Copenhagen Post said Thursday.

Makes me wonder which other breakfast cereal company(s) are lining his pockets.

Are you using Firefox 3? (Scripting News)

Just read your post and am downloading it now. Thanks for the heads up.

Update – Can’t run it on the Mac as I am still using 10.3.9 due to Apples stupid DRM in later versions of the OS. Guess I’ll need to boot the linux box and try it there.

spacetoday.net: Ares 1 vibration worries eased

Uh, yea. The vibrations aren’t strong enough to cause problems but they are looking into shock absorbers both on the engine and even on the seats. If the problems are severe enough for the seats to need vibration damping, what is gonna be the effect on EVERYTHING else thats on board? Something tells me that there is more to this that they are trying to gloss over.

The links to newspaper articles give a LOT more info on both the problem and the proposed solutions. Seems the same general type of oscillations caused one of the early unmanned Saturn V test rockets to fail.

The internet thinks I’m FAT! πŸ˜† πŸ˜† πŸ˜†

Through with Thursday

By , April 3, 2008 11:03 pm

The pinball machine turned into one of those tar babies and is gonna be easier and cheaper to walk away from rather than continue beating my head into the wall. Power supply board fix worked fine but it has major computer problems that I am not gonna get into.

Saw looks doable but didn’t get anything done on it other than look at it. Tomorrow or the first of the week.

Morning was fine energy wise. Afternoon ended up spent sleeping on the couch. Phone woke me a little before 5 and I’ve been on the computer since. Been through somewhere over 1500 entries and read a few hundred of those. Still got a couple of thousand give or take a few hundred. But am getting closer to caught up.

Ribose is certainly doing something for me. Even with all the typing I have been doing this afternoon and tonight my hands and arms are not hurting. Has been YEARS since I have been able to go this long without them knotting up on me and saying NO MORE. That alone is worth the price but add in the ability to concentrate and think and it’d be cheap and 3 times the price. Only been on it for 4 days now so is really too soon to tell what the long term effects will be but for the first time in years I seem to be seeing a glimmer at the end of the tunnel and not hearing the roar of an oncoming train… 😎

Gonna skim a few more feeds and then call it a night. Till tomorrow… 😎

Regulate Blood Sugar with Tea, Red Wine : Planet Green
While the heart-protecting and cancer-fighting powers of tea and red wine are near legendary, researchers at the University of Massachusetts Amherst have discovered that imbibing these beverages may help regulate the blood sugar of people with type 2 diabetes.

Ò€œLevels of blood sugar, or blood glucose, rise sharply in patients with type 2 diabetes immediately following a meal,Ò€ says Kalidas Shetty, professor of food biotechnology at the University of Massachusetts, and one of the authors of the study, which was published in the May issue of the Journal of Food Biochemistry. Ò€œRed wine and tea contain natural antioxidants that may slow the passage of glucose through the small intestine and eventually into the bloodstream and prevent this spike, which is an important step in managing this disease.Ò€

Building on some of the earlier posts about tea and red wine we come to this one combining the two to help regulate the blood sugar levels of folks with type 2 diabetes. Control is always better than medicine in my book… πŸ˜‰

7 oz dried Chinese noodles
2 tbsp peanut oil
2 large red chilies, seeded and chopped
2 tbsp shredded ginger
1/2 head bok choy, or other Asian greens
3 tbsp hoisin sauce
1/4 cup soy sauce
1 tbsp sugar
4 chicken breast fillets, sliced
2 egg whites, lightly whisked
1 cup rice flour
2 tsp Chinese five spice powder
1 tsp salt
extra peanut oil to shallow fry

1. Heat the oil in a frying pan or wok over high heat. Add the chilies and ginger and cook for 2 minutes. Add the greens, hoisin sauce, soy and sugar and cook for 4 minutes or until the vegetables are tender.

2. To make the chicken, dip the pieces into the egg white, then toss in the combined rice flour, five spice powder and salt. Heat enough oil in a saucepan to shallow fry the chicken and cook a few pieces at a time until golden.

3. Meanwhile, place noodles in a saucepan of boiling water and cook for 3 minutes or until soft. Drain and toss with the greens and sauce.

4. To serve, place the noodle mixture on serving plates and top with the crispy chicken.

Interesting. Never really thought about the coffee grounds and oil clogging up the grinder. Use part of a piece of stale dry bread and grind it up, it’ll clear out the grounds and dry up the oils too!
