Power Your TV, Cell Phone, or Laptop by Pedaling (TreeHugger)

Whereas the video of him playing the video game isn’t that thrilling, the concept that he proves will work with is rather interesting.

The high speed start up is what keeps me from using an old stationary bike for this. Problem is the wheel is too small. Could use a smaller pulley on the alternator. May look and see if a knerled sleeve would fit over the alternator shaft where the pulley mounts and try for a spring loaded drive right off the wheel. That might get the speed up enough to self energize. Will have to do some math and see how close I can come that way.

Things like this make me wonder if all politicians have their brains removed when going into office. Stupid, stupid, stupid…

Lighter Footstep - Review: EarthLED’s Bright Idea

LED house lights are here and cost is starting to get, if not reasonable, then closer to it. The 3 watt units claims to output the same light as a 40 watt bulb and are under $30.00 us each. At 50,000 hours expected life thats cheap per hour. With the added benefit of not containing mercury like the compact fluorescents if these are on the shelves at the store they are gonna sell! Glad to see these on the market.

blog gnist org - Synergy - two screens, two OSes

Have read about (and may have even posted about) synergy before but never tried it. Tis a good read and he does several things to ensure that no one snoops. Good pointers and code to go with them. When I get another monitor (ain’t giving my flat screen/iBook dual screen setup up) for the linux box and get it back up and running I’d like to try to set it up like this dude has done. Nice!

Neat! Love the tolerances they are dealing with! 50 millionths of an inch works whereas 100 doesn’t. Steam is some tenacious stuff!

Boing Boing: The IT Crowd — season two, episode one

Good stuff! So glad to see it back for a second season.

Note for those with Macs or at least those with older iBook G4s with 10.3.X on them - The name is cut off with a * at the end. Need to remove the last 4 or more characters and add a .avi and Quicktime will play it fine.

Area

The standard unit of area shall be the nanoWales, defined as 1nWa, representing 0.0000207km2 or 20.78m2, 5.195 Thai talang wah or 28.99 Old Spanish square vara. The microWales, milliWales and Wales (Wa) are, naturally, accepted multiples of the base nanoWales.

* Football pitch = 194.89nWa
* Wales = 1,000,000,000nWa
* Belgium = 1.47Wa
* Democratic Republic of Congo = 113.3Wa
* Known universe (rolled out flat) = 19468502×1012x10256Wa

Steve alerted me to this one (Wish he would post them himself :-) ). Thanks dude! Funny as h e double toothpicks…
