Saturday doing nothing

By , June 14, 2008 10:54 pm

Another day spent reading and doing little as possible. Think I am starting to come out of it a bit at least as long as I stay inside out of the heat. Did manage to get a couple more books listed on the auction site. Tis slow going. Gonna have to look at some of the other ways of adding items to the site rather than the one at a time that I am doing now. Need to hit the sack here in a few. Got to go out and about for a while tomorrow so will close for the nonce. Till I typo again… πŸ˜‰

Another Friday

By , June 13, 2008 10:19 pm

Not much to report. Another down day here. Did finally get a bit of rain. Could use more. Birmingham is saying they have a surplus but this is the first we have had here at the farm in a couple of weeks other than a couple of sprinkles that didn’t even wet the dust down good.

Just got through with adding the first item (a book) to the site. Am hoping it will get faster as I get more used to it. Am going to wait till I get some more stuff listed before posting a link.

Am close to calling it a night, so till tomorrow…

Another day done

By , June 12, 2008 10:41 pm

Another mostly nothing day. Have spent some time tonight setting up an account at a auction site. Soon as I get some stuff listed will post the url. Hope to get that done tomorrow. Till then…

And on June 11, 2008

By , June 11, 2008 3:50 pm

at about 3:30pm, I broke down, cleaned the filters and turned the ac on. Yes I know it’s supposed to be cooler today but it was up to 94.8 F out front at 12:45 and I am to the point of melting/itching/screaming, so tis on for now anyway. At least till it cools off a bit and then will get cut off. I can’t take it over about 85 any more.

Another long hot day

By , June 10, 2008 11:55 pm

And one spent mostly on the couch. Hoping tomorrow will be a bit cooler. Till then…

Another long hot Alabama day

By , June 9, 2008 9:23 pm

Went out this am and mailed out some ebay stuff then went and paid bills. After that went by the Salvation Army and picked up a few books then made a few thrift shop and antique mall stops where we just looked and enjoyed their ac (what of it there was). Stopped at Dollar Tree in Lenlock for some stuff and then home for the day. Did supper and a bit of reading of feeds and am about to call it an early night. Till tomorrow… πŸ˜‰

By , June 8, 2008 11:33 pm

Been a hot one today. After another long night last night slept in this morning. Got out mid afternoon and piddled around at the Antique Mall in Jacksonville for a while just to see what was new and to use some one else’s ac. Stopped at the grocery store and then went by my folks house to pick up a 13 inch sears planer my brother had left there for me. Sat and talked for a bit then when the lightening struck near by headed back home. Read a bit then ate and been browsing since. Till tomorrow… πŸ˜‰

Long hot Saturday

By , June 7, 2008 10:57 pm

Problems and moves abound. I’m tired of dns changes taking days with one host where they take minutes with another. Changes are coming and soon. Still looking for the right hosting service but one way or another we are going to make a move soon and the company I work with is going to also.

I was informed a couple of hours ago that a dns change can take 72 hours to propagate across the Internet. The problem being that we didn’t make a dns change, the hosting service did and now they are telling us that it can take our sites down for 3 days or so and there is nothing that we or they can do about it. None of the other sites are affected, just the one I was working on last night. And they don’t know why it’s showing up as hosted by another company. Yet again. Neither do I, but I bet if I move it to another host this problem will not happen again. Asshats…

Spent most of the day out and about at yard sales, estate sale, thrift stores and using other folks ac. Did spend more money than we had planned to but got a bunch of good salable stuff, and I think made some good contacts. Going to hit the sack in a few and start again in the morning, so will type again when I get back. Till then… πŸ˜‰

Long hot Friday

By , June 6, 2008 10:11 pm

Been fighting a bad hard drive today. Not in one of our machines for a change though. Turned out that the drive has about 8% bad sectors which is keeping it from doing much of anything. Found another drive that seemed ok that I tried to copy it over to but after a couple of tries wrote 00’s to and checked and it too had bad sectors so will wait till the customer gets another drive to me and will try again.

Keep having website corruption and hacking too. Not just on my sites but on customers sites. The problem with the customers sites has been hackers or some such putting foreign code and java scripts into the existing php pages. Makes for some interesting recovery problems. Have just been alerted to another site tonight that has problems. Am not going to even try tonight. Will go in tomorrow (or when I get to it as it’s not a paying site any more) and see what has to be done and worry about it then.

Tis still quite hot and I’m about done in so am gonna call it a night and start again tomorrow. Till then… πŸ˜‰

Bit of nothing Thursday

By , June 5, 2008 8:59 pm

Guess I over did it with the shelves and books, so today was mostly spent on the couch. Did get out for a short while this afternoon to pick up a few books and a set of Noritake china that we’re going to have up for sale here shortly. It’s a 90 (? haven’t counted it yet so may be off by a piece or two) piece set bought in Japan in 1950 or 51, marked Occupied Japan on the bottom. Nice stuff! Will have pictures and such up and a link to the sale site(s) asap. Other than that and shelving a very few books been mostly lazy today. Just too hot to do much and too sore even if it wasn’t. Hoping tomorrow will be a more productive day. Till then… πŸ˜‰

Wall O Shelves Done

By , June 4, 2008 8:55 pm

All 228 liner feet of them, and that’s not counting the books sitting on the floor in the 14 inches under the lowest shelf. There are now 8 sets of 4 foot wide units that have 7 shelves each, and one 4 foot section above the door. Lotta shelves. In fact they now take that entire wall except for the door, all 32 feet of it. Got all the books relocated and a fair number of the ones that had no home put into place. Still got a hundred or so in one of the living room chairs, but hope to get them put up later tonight. Got a 3 foot section over the bedroom door that I am going to add a shelf in, as well as another one the same over the door into Cat’s office at the other end of the room. Have a pile of old vhs tapes that I am going to build shelves for and move into what was the bathroom and that will leave the outside wall in the hall area open to cover with book shelves which will allow us to move another thousand or so from the Q-hut into here. Getting closer, I think.

Cat cut my locks off today. Washing the hair is now quick and mostly painless other than the razer burn on my neck. πŸ˜‰ And a LOT cooler. May cut it a bit shorter on top, just gonna wait and see how it works as is for now. Beard is still in place though I am thinking of giving it a summer trim up here soon.

For now am gonna take a break and gaze at my wall o books for a bit. And maybe put a few more in place. Then take an early snooze as last night was still working at nearly midnight and my feet and legs have been telling me about it all day. Till I type again… πŸ˜‰

Bookshelves and books

By , June 3, 2008 11:17 pm

Been working on shelves and shelving books all day and most of the night. Am about 2/3s of the way through with reshelving the books. And lack one 4 foot section replacing the 2 inch thick shelf with a 1 inch thick piece, one 4 foot 6 inch section adding a shelf and the 16 foot section moving it up about 2 inches as well as blocking off the last window on that wall. Have already paneled over two of them and I think I have enough scrap to do the last one as well. All in all should be done with this portion of the rebuilding late tomorrow baring unforeseen problems and/or interruptions. Then I guess I will start on insulating paneling the inside of the upstairs in preparation to building in shelving and cabinets on all the walls. Slowly, slowly eats the elephant…

About to call it a night. Till tomorrow… πŸ˜‰

More shelves

By , June 2, 2008 6:25 pm

Spent most of the day building more shelving for our books. Added 21 linear feet in the living room by removing a door. Am working on adding the 20 feet just below the ceiling and raising the existing 16 feet to allow hardbacks to stand upright on the top row. Not sure that last sentence makes sense unless you’ve been here. Will try to get pix and post them soon to try to explain it…

Got 10 pounds, minus about a pound of skin and fat, of chicken leg quarters in the 14″ dutch oven and carrots, celery, onions, and potatoes along with salt, pepper, chives, parsley, basil and oil, in the 12″ dutch oven cooking for supper and a lot more meals later on.

Started moving the books on the shelves. Still got thousands to go, as well as adding in the ones that are piled on top of and in between and on the floor. Tis a never ending job or seems that way. And when we buy a hundred or more a week I guess it really is… πŸ˜‰

Gonna go and check on the food and start clearing off the top shelf to raise it. May or may not post again later. Depends on many things. Till I post again… πŸ˜‰

Sunday at the homestead

By , June 1, 2008 10:26 pm

Didn’t get out today. Or not off the property anyway. Did get outside a time or two but soon returned to the couch or computer. Got some of the books we bought Friday put on the shelves or piled in the to-sell piles. Still got about half of them to go. Did a bit on a couple of websites and that’s about all. Tomorrows another day. Will see what it brings. Till then… πŸ˜‰

Saturday all day

By , May 31, 2008 8:13 pm

Nothing much day today. Yesterday wore me (us) out and we’ve been mostly inside and out of it all day. Got out mid afternoon and went to the store for some stuff, then back here, fixed and ate supper and back on the couch. Hoping to get out and about for a bit tomorrow but it all depends on how we’re doing in the am. Till then am gonna be taking it easy and doing nothing but reading or sleeping… πŸ˜‰

Out and about Friday

By , May 30, 2008 9:25 pm

Left out this morning about 9:30 and made a stop at the post office in Alexandria so Cat could ship some E-Bay stuff out. From there headed to Poor Man’s Trade Day in Gadsden. Walked about half way around the place, noticed the folks with the string were there, then walked on around to see what else was there today, and stopped to look at a couple of cast metal horses some folks had. They looked up and told us that if we wanted it that a whole pile of stuff they had there was free, just haul it off. As I have a hard time walking away from free stuff, I went and got the truck and loaded it up. Then we bought the horses. πŸ˜‰ From there walked around a bit more and then went back to the folks that had the string. Haggled with them back and forth for some time and ended up getting it all (around 750 rolls and skeins) at a good price. Afterwards talked to them for a bit and then as most of the other folks were closing up we left. Went to Goodwill and got a few books and some cross stitch kits that we found there. Then went to Apple A Day and got more Ribose and some fruit spritzers and then went east on 411 to the North Gadsden Park and ate lunch. Next was back west on 411 to Rainbow City and American Thrift Store where we picked up a few more books and some more cross stitch kits and string. From there to Eagle Rock Thrift Store where we got MANY more books. They had put a new batch out and had a bunch of authors that we look for, which at 4/$1 paperbacks and 3/$1 hardbacks, were just too hard to pass up. Cat also found 16 cross stitch pattern books that we got for a $1. Ended up with over 80 paperbacks and 13 hardbacks. Headed west and got 4 or 5 at the Rainbow City Library book sale (like we hadn’t already gotten enough today…). Back to Alexandria and Food Land for bread and sodas (for Cat) and then to my folks house to pick up a rocking chair (and repack the truck) and eat supper. Then home. Been a long and somewhat pleasant day. For now am going to go and sort some books and then hit the sack. Not sure what tomorrow will bring. Guess we will see when it gets here. Till then… πŸ˜‰

Another down day

By , May 29, 2008 11:46 am

Got up this morning with hurting hands and arms and a head that is mostly non functioning. Been trying to get started on anything and having little to no luck. Did go to the barn for a bit and made/bent some S hooks to replace the bungie balls I used yesterday to attach tie-ropes to the tarp on the shelter out front. Took far too long to cut/bend and then install them but did get at least that much done so I can quit thinking about it now…

Came back in and sat down at the computer to do a bit of work and after sitting here for a half hour or so, trying to do some long overdue setup stuff on our new e-commerce site, realized while that I was doing nothing but clicking links and that the text I was trying to read was making no sense. So looks like another day on the couch reading and/or sleeping. May or may not post more today. Depends on the head… πŸ™

Another weary Wednesday

By , May 28, 2008 10:44 pm

Got out and did a bit more nail pulling this morning, then it started to sprinkle. Got the tools up and put them inside, then went to the camp across the creek and got the pieces of a shelter and brought them back and put it up out front. Covered it with the 10 x 12 canvas tarp and moved a couple of saw horses underneath and got the tools back out. By which time I had run out of energy. And the rain stopped about the time I crossed the creek to get the pieces of the shelter. But it’s up and will keep both rain and sun off when I feel up to cleaning more lumber.

Been inside, mostly lying down and reading the rest of the day. Did take a bit of time and set up PCLOS to print to the network printer. Was the easiest time I have had setting up a printer under linux. Done through the Administration Center and all automatic. Nice! Other than that and a bit of reading feeds, I used svn to get a copy of WordPress 2.5.2-alpha and installed it here on the local network to play with. As I said in an earlier post it ran so good I decided to try it on this site. Seems to be working fine. Nothing visible as far as I can see change wise. From what I have read most if not all of the changes are under the hood. Time will tell…

Think I am going to check the feeds and hit the sack. May go out and about tomorrow depending on the weather. Till then… πŸ˜‰

Not much Tuesday

By , May 27, 2008 10:19 pm

Spent some time cutting weeds this morning. Got the area around the critter feeding station cleared and then hit an old bicycle seat. Bent the blade again. Continued cutting anyway. Cut the parking area at the yard sale trailer and most of the front and drive side areas and started on the back when I realized I had been in the sun too long and quit. Cat came over and brought water and I came back over here and inside for a while and cooled off. Went out front with tools of destruction and started cleaning the lumber Steve and Aaron brought over. Worked on it till the sun got to me again and called it a day for outside work. Haven’t gotten to the 12 foot piece that broke my face yet, but will have to do something special with it, just not sure what yet…

After that the day was downhill. Have been sitting or lying down reading. Guess I should have taken another day off but things needed to be done, so I did. Will see what the morrow brings. Till then… πŸ˜‰
