Friday reading feeds

By , April 4, 2008 9:57 pm

I spent most of the day getting through the last of the backlog of stuff in the feedreader, so this should be the last day with 20+ posts in a day for a while anyhow. πŸ˜‰

Lots of storm warnings around here today. And quite a few storms came through too. Had a couple of close lightening strikes but no damage at least that I know of. Am glad that it’s fairly quite tonight. Hope it stays that way…

Think I am gonna call it an early night. Till tomorrow. 😎

DIY Electric Kawsaki Motorcycle : TreeHugger

This is freaking awsome! Has a 15 mile range and a top speed of 40 mph. Gonna have to look through the bits and pieces of several motorcycles that I have in the barn and start looking for a motor and pricing batteries. 😯 😎

Coffee may cut the risk of dementia by blocking the damage cholesterol can inflict on the body, research suggests.

And a good reason to drink coffee… πŸ™„ πŸ˜‰

Mobile phones ‘more dangerous than smoking’ : TreeHugger
So says Dr. Vini Khurana, an Australian neurosurgeon. His recent 15-month critical review of the link between mobile phones and malignant brain tumors concludes that the phones could kill far more people than smoking or asbestos, that people should avoid using them wherever possible, and that governments and the mobile phone industry must take “immediate steps” to reduce exposure to their radiation.

I don’t know if they are or aren’t dangerous, but studies saying they are keep popping up from all over the world so I use one as little as possible. Time will tell.

Makes a LOT of sense to do it this way vs the huge dams and massive turbines. Instead have a LOT of small units. One goes out just put another in it’s place. Hope they get the permits and go ahead.

Glad to see that the Judge threw this out. Stupid waste of the taxpayers money to be in court in the first place and wouldn’t have happened if the cop hadn’t been a complete ass about it.

Brain Scanner Can Tell What You’re Looking At

Interesting and scary at the same time. Lots of uses as well as misuses for this kind of tech. First thing that comes to mind is Big Brother and thought crimes. Then there is communicating with folks that can’t due to birth defects or injuries.

Supercharge Your Camera with Open-Source CHDK Firmware – Wired How-To Wiki

Supercharge Your Camera with Open-Source CHDK Firmware – Wired How-To Wiki
Digital cameras have powers beyond what is immediately available to the user. On a standard Canon, for example, the fastest shutter speed option offered is 1/1,600 second, but the hardware can handle much more than that — up to 1/60,000 of a second.

CHDK, the Canon Hacker’s Development Kit, is an open-source software project that can be loaded on cameras using Canon’s DIGIC II or DIGIC III firmware platforms. It unleashes new features including RAW file format, live histogram display, a battery readout, and the ability to run scripted actions on a camera.

CHDK does not replace the existing firmware on your Canon, so the process is completely reversible. The existing firmware stays intact, while the CHDK software is loaded on demand from an SD card.

Makes me want to get a Canon camera and try this. Sounds quite interesting.
